This is my attempt at creating a college basketball power ranking system. I will try and update each week as the polls and RPI's come out. The formula is similar to that used in the BCS rankings for college football. I know I may have lost some of you right there, but I did say similar and not exact. My rankings are comprised of 4 components, as opposed to three in the BCS. I use three polls (AP, USA Today, ESPN Power Rankings) and one RPI metric (Realtime RPI, CBS RPI, Warren Nolan, KenPom, Rivals, and StatSheet).

The polls take the total points given for each team divided by the total possible points. For instance, duke received 1622 point this week out of a possible 1625 in the AP Poll, so there poll component for this ranking is 0.9982. The 1625 is calculated as 64 voters times a possible 25 points. The other polls are calculated the same.

The RPI Metric is calculated by using the top 25 from each of the six RPI's noted above and taking out the highest and lowest score. Then I took the four RPI's left, assigned a point value (25 points for #1, 24 points for #2, 23 points for #3, etc.) added them up and divided that by 100. For instance, Duke was ranked 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1 in the RPI's, which gives them point values of 25, 25, 25, 22, 25, 25. Throw out a 25 and the 22, and you are left with four 25's or 100. Divide this by a total possible of 100, and that gives you a score of 1.000 for the RPI Metric.

Ok, for anyone who was able to follow that, or that just skipped to this part, here are the rankings for this week:

    1) Duke: 0.99866

Here are the rankings for week 9 of the season. I didn't have time to update last week due to the holidays, so this is the first update in 2 weeks. New to the top 25 is Oklahoma State at 24. The Cowboys went 2-1 since the last poll with the loss being a 1 point loss to Gonzaga. The were bumped by a significant boost in the RPI component from 0.000 to 0.18277. Exiting the poll was North Carolina who went 2-1 with a win over UNLV and a loss to Texas. North Carolinas drop in the polls hurt their index this week. Their average poll ranking was 22.3 for the previous rankings and was at 28.6 this week. The biggest positive movers in the index were Kansas, Gonzaga, and Michigan State. Kansas went 2-0 since the last ranking with a win over Ohio State. Gonzaga went 3-0 with wins over Baylor and Oklahoma State. Michigan State went 2-1 with a win over Texas and a loss to Minnesota. The biggest losers this week were Syracuse, Florida, and UNLV. Syracuse went 3-1 with three cupcake wins and a loss to Temple. Florida went 1-1 with a loss to Kansas St. UNLV went 2-1 with wins over UNI and Canisius, but was hurt by a loss to North Carolina.
