The kansas.com article stated he will have surgery tomorrow and the cast will come off two weeks later. They are putting a screw in to hold it in place. It also said he could be ready for the Evansville game on Jan 13.
EDIT: I noticed they said Wessel is still thinking about surgery. To me it must mean redshirting for him if he elects surgery. Otherwise why the wait?

Ya this sucks, but if he can be back by Jan 16 home game against ISUr, then we may be fine. Outside of UNI at home, our valley schedule isnt very tough, and if we can go 3-2 or 4-1 until CH gets back, I think we will be ok.Follow me on twitter: https://twitter.com/Shox_KCfan

I fractured my thumb this summer and I still do not have my full range of motion back. This is going to be a tough injury for Carl to overcome but with a great training staff I'm sure they will get him up to speed as soon as possible. Missing four weeks would put Carl back for the game on January 16th against Illinois State before the January 19th game against Creighton. Hope the surgery goes well tomorrow and the healing can begin!!!

I believe it's been said that Wessel could play in two more games and still get a medical hardship. If he wants, he can test it in game action a couple of times and make a decision. With his style of play and his shooting ability, I'd would bet it'd be in his best interest to have surgery and take the redshirt.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:

It was very interesting finding out how many of our players were battling injuries after our NIT championship. It's quite common for players to play with fractured fingers. It all has to do with their pain tolerance.
