Luxury boxes would involve a much larger expansion and rob the arena of seats. That retarded design at IBA costed the arena a ton of seats. When I think of luxury boxes I think of the NBA and cocktail parties. When you come to watch the Shockers you go to war. The old and young, the rich and not-rich, have been sitting in seats (or benches) and cheering on the Shockers since 1950. I don't want to look into a luxury box at Koch Arena and see some nitwit watching an NFL game on T.V. and sipping Chardonnay while the Shockers are in a battle on the hardwood.
I can only imagine the money involved in putting a new roof on. That's a lot of investment to work within design constraints that will really limit what can and can't be done.
The Roundhouse Renaissance cost around 20M and I think we got a lot of bang for our buck. Could the roof, additional infrastructural support, and seats be added for 50M? I know a brand new arena would cost at least 150M.
The beautiful thing is, now that we have IBA, we can enjoy our games down there during the year of construction instead of schlepping out to the Cow Palace on B.F.E. 35.

Too BJ-esque for ya?
Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

If you raise the roof, the only thing you do is create taller walls around the circular structure. The only place to put seats is to hang them off the vertical wall one row at a time. You'd have to climb some sort of vertical ladder to get to the seats. Then there'd have to be some sort of catwalk to get you to any seat not next to the ladder. For safety, there would have to be a railing to prevent you from falling off the catwalk or through the railing. The railing would interfere with the view. Those would be some BAD seats.
You'd have to expand the circumference to add any seats. That would involve tearing down all the added facilities from the last rehab, throwing away the current roof structure, redesigning the entire roof to be stable over the larger diameter - do I need to go on?
CKA CANNOT be expanded. It's running at 97% - 100% capacity. That seems to be about the most ideal size
CU can put 17K in CLink because CU is the only D1 basketball program in the state and all the UNL FB fans need something to do between Fall FB and Spring FB. Wichita has a larger metro population than Omaha, but we have to share BB fans with KSU and KU. We can put just north of 10K into basketball games. We have insanely high prices compared to the rest of the Valley. CU has Groupon tickets for $6, which just turns out to be what the ticket processing facility charges to sell a ticket.
If there is to be a new facility, let's build a domed facility that both baseball and basketball can use - and make sure it can be adapted to FB and there is an expansion plan to seat 50K for FB. That's probably more practical than enlarging Koch. And Stephenson would love it.

The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades. We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

The top of the bowl is already much higher than the offices and other 2nd floor amenities. The idea would be to extend the bowl and support it somehow with rocket surgeon like architectural science. The roof will either have to be modified or replaced.

Club BJ is a sham. We know this. Nothing to see here.

Sounds like nothing 300M couldn't handle. Talk about a pipe dream.
The material is pound-for-pound stronger than steel while weighing less than 5 ounces per square foot. It offers up to 24 percent solar translucency, letting in lots of natural light. At the same time, it provides as much as 75 percent solar reflectance, keeping out heat and making it an energy-efficient roofing alternative. It is also cost effective due to its durability and low-maintenance characteristics.
Does anybody have a problem with this material for the roof?
Would it be possible to take the durrent roof off and set it aside, build a concentric circle support structure that would be 25' or so than the exisiting ourer wall. This would provide a large ground floor corridor that could be used for additional concessions, restrooms, meeting rooms, study rooms, etc., in addition to escalators and staircases to the new upper seating. This wall would be two times the height of the existing structure. At the top, there would be this 25' cooridor with all the amenities. The new seats would be cantilevered from the new structure and could provide 10-15 rows of seats around the entire circumference. For example, the closest seat would be directly above the current entryway (row 21). I'm estimating that this would create perhaps 5,000 additional seats, with access to the seats would be from the top.
The roof to the new support structure could have it's roof around the outside ring be essentially an extension of the existing roof, which could be re-attached as the middle of the new roofline.
Looking at what they do with major league ballparks, I would think this would be possible, but have no clue as to the cost of doing it, of course. See the link for the type of design. http://www.ballparktour.com/New_Cantilever_Dia.gif

--------------------------------------- Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare: "We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said: "That's the definition of a stool sample."
I think WSU moving all or at least some of the games downtown would be more of a realistic option for the athletic department (there's a comment which is sure to rile up the cut-off-their-nose-to-spite-their-face anti-IBA crowd).
Anyway, I'll play along because however unrealistic expanding/replacing CKA may be, these discussions are fun. Is 12k-13k big enough? Wichita is notorious for building things without future growth in mind. I think 15k-16k is more likely what we would need for the future. If the Wichita MSA averages a 5% growth rate its population will be around 800,000 by 2050, which is probably a conservative estimate. That's a lot of new Shocker fans, especially if Bardo can get our student body north of 20,000. If an expanded/new CKA has only 12k-13k seats, we'll be having this same discussion the moment the damn thing opens for business.
I love where your head is at cold! I have been secretly dreaming about a bigger koch for years. Lets go shocker architects, we want to see some drawings =)
