This year is over. The WORST case scenario for this program is for the team to get hot in Ft Worth, steal a bid, then get clobbered in the first round of the tourney. The program is no better off and Mills gets an automatic year extension. I hate saying this but ... I do not want us to make the tourney at this point.

The best thing for the program is to play the younger guys and really give a chance to show what they can ... or can't do ... in real games. Then you have a realistic view of what you need talent wise from the portal in April. BC and JH maybe have a higher ceiling THIS YEAR .. but that's irrelevant to the long term of the program at this point.
I hear ya BUT wouldn't making the NCAA Tourney help Mills recruit some talent? I mean we do lose like 37 players to graduation after this season. Need to fill an almost entirely new roster for next season. Plus making the NCAA Tourney this season (highly unlikely I realize) would surely ignite the fanbase heading into next season with a potential bigger NIL budget. I say go for it! Go win in Ft. Worth!!! Get our name back up there THIS MARCH!!!

With an automatic extension to his contract? No. I don't want Mills here any longer than absolutely necessary and I don't want to have to pay him any more than we have to at any given time. I'm sure adding a year only makes it a bit more expensive for us.

      • I'm not against Mills succeeding here. I'm not sold that he has the ability to that just yet, based on the players he's recruited so far, but winning and getting better players would help and I'm not against seeing how that would play out.

Yeah I'm not advocating for Mills necessarily...more the program, the university and overall perception. I'd rather not wait any longer lest our "brand" cache completely bottom out. We need to win like yesterday!

P.s. - wait are you saying if he makes the NCAA Tourney he gets another year added to his overall contract???

Yes. In his contract he gets an automatic one year extension if he wins the conference tournament.

Hmmm....I may have to rethink my previous thought then. Lemme get back to you on that one....

I'm not worried about an automatic 1-year extension as none of the triggering events are likely to occur. 25-win season? Winning the AAC? Not effin likely.

What I don't like about Mills' contract is that, even if we wait until after year 3 to terminate, we still owe Mills 75% of the remainder of his pay. Brown's contract only stipulated 50%. That, and the end of Mills' year 3 isn't until June 30, 2026, which is too late in the year to be looking for a new head coach.

                  • Does anyone know when the ridiculously high cost buyout clauses became the norm for college coaches? I might understand a reasonable amount, but to me anything larger than the amount the next year's base salary is ridiculous. Especially in this new age of players likely only being around two years at best.

Probably when the TV money started to get ridiculous. Not that some of you don't already know this, but coaches didn't used to get paid like kings. Once upon a time (80s), the three coaches in Kansas made very similar money.
