  • This is NOT the 90’s

There has been much to-do made about how this is as bad as the 90’s, and while we have had a couple bad seasons, this is nowhere near the decade of desolation that was Shocker basketball under Cohen, Thompson, and Smithson. Those teams were awful and routinely were among the bottom 1/3 of D1.

Maybe not, but as a 90s baby, this is as bad as it’s ever been for me. So that’s all I care about.

Give it time. By the end of the year, we may be in the bottom third based on NET.

Attendance, actual attendance, may already be worse.

I didn't get to watch much of the 90s teams as they weren't on TV very much, so I can't compare how they played compared to their peers and such. But I can tell you, I was probably more interested in following them then than I am now. Now I do it because I'm a glutton for punishment I guess. I used to search out everything I could in the paper. Maybe it's because I was a kid and didn't know any better.

The trajectory continues to be downward over the past five or so years and it's only looking to get worse. Odds are, the time we're in now will be looked at down the road as at least similar to the decade of darkness that I called the 90s.

In the 90’s we didn’t have to fight a no-holds-barred, de facto, perpetual free agency coupled with an auction style system of financial incentive with the same sort of guardrails, or lack thereof. To say nothing of conference TV contracts.

In the 90’s the attendance and atmosphere of HLA was still hanging on, twenty-some-odd years before a self-flagellating babbling nincompoop of a university president ran off all the big boosters, and the inevitability of mortality starting taking out all the fan lifeblood the program had built up decades before.

Nope! No, this ecosystem is very much worse than the 90’s, which really just required three things: good coaching hires, reasonable program budgets, and butts in seats.

I’d take the 90’s again every day of the week and twice on Sundays. In the current Wild West of college athletics an oil and water separation is happening wherein roughly the top half of the P4 will dominate, the lower half of P4 will be entertaining and sometimes competitive fodder for the prior, and everybody else will revert to essentially club sport level of profile and draw. Give it 10-20 years and tell me I’m wrong.

I really thought Randy was turning things around until he didn’t.

I remember being super excited to take a bus to the NIT game in Ames. A few years later that seemed quaint. A few more years and now an NIT game sounds like a pipe dream.

Imagine getting a Jamar Howard or Paul Miller or Randy Burns through 4 years of NIL free agency in today’s game.

12th is worse than 8th. There are more opportunities to beat somebody.
Now, I was on campus and there were not some great dudes on campus. I haven't heard the same complaint of this group.
I will give 1 guy accolades from the 90's. Paul Wight was a big dude that caught a teasing. I wasn't great friends, he probably wouldn't remember me, but he always seemed like a good guy.

I do think of this. I am certainly not pleased at all with how the team is performing, but I recognize that we have some good dudes. I can at least appreciate that.

Doc has told me stories about Mike Cohen’s tenure. If that ever returned, I’d be ****ing done with Shocker Basketball.

                        Dan,
Certainly reminding of those dark times.
Looking at current schedule trying to find a win or two among them.
Rice I guess....Maybe Tulsa at home. Charlotte this Sunday?
Other than that, not much to get excited about.

Wondering about Shocker attendance in DFW for AAC tournament.
                        I won't be there.

Wow, thought those times were gone forever. Finding out forever is a long time.

                        That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

Definitely not the 90's. I went to a few games. We were Butler CCC level. Occasionally you'd see a nice player like Jamie Arnold (loved the nachos in the stands), but the entire team was NAIA. ChicKUns would beat us by 40. That wouldn't happen now. We have an elite center and small forward/wing. The rest of the team's skill and athleticism is well above the average 1990's player.

                          Enjoy some mid-1990's Shocker bball!

The Big Show got the last laugh. The Interweb lists his net worth at $16M. Shook his hand once. CB's hand fit inside his like a little pebble.

I'm sorry for posting that 90's video. Here's one from '85 to settle your stomach. Look at that crowd. Look at that team! I love the FVV era, but there's NOTHING like the early 80's Shockers. That team shoulda won a Natty. If only we didn't share the state with the biggest hypocritical *****-ass tattlin' chickens on earth...
