  • Landry Shamet......

I HATE to bring this up because not all subscribe to the Athletic( WHY NOT???? IT'S AMAZING!!!) but if you could, there is a GREAT article on Landry and his journey through the NBA , with the various bumps in the road, mainly injuries...but Tom Thibideau LOVES him, as do other teammates. I HATE that this can't be posted here but if you get a chance , grab a read...I loved watching him play!

You can post articles, but not the text of articles behind a paywall, at least as I understand it.

“You can execute with him,” Thibodeau said. “He makes the extra pass. He reads the floor well. He hustles on defense. He blocks out and blocks cutters, applies ball pressure, challenges a shot, moves without the ball. There are a lot of things that he does that aren’t necessarily reflected in statistics but help a team function well.”

I remember we had a coach that really emphasized those things.

We've transitioned from the old school thinking of blocking cutters, transition defense with communication and rebounding to a much more modern day energy of affirmation that includes juice boxes and apple slices.

I hosted the team for dinner in August of Landry's freshman year. I introduced myself, he stopped, looked me in the eye, shook my hand and thanked me. I asked him if his plan was to follow in the footsteps of Freddy and hit the NBA in a couple of years (I was smiling, admittedly being a bit of a smartass) and without hesitation and without a modicum of arrogance (imho) "Yes, sir, that's the plan."

In that moment I had a pretty good idea Gregg had brought another special young man into the fold. Very measured and sharp young man who overcame a ton of adversity. I will NEVER understand or forgive men that either abandon or who are never engaged in the raising of the children they father (and I use that term only in the strictest biological sense). There are all kinds of failures in this world, and that's at the top of any list.

Similar story. I saw Darron in the spring of 2015 (I know, I know…but this is a positive story, so I’ll share it). I asked him, kinda jokingly, if scheduling was going to get a little bit easier for him and Gregg once Fred and Ron left. He very plainly said, “Not when people see that Shamet kid play.”

You could tell by watching the Tulsa game in 15-16 that Landry was special, even though he scored four points and fouled out. Still wonder what that season and postseason run might have looked like with another 3 pt shooter (and if he truly could have come back for the tournament).
