Saal just signed a 3-year contract extension in June, but the story was published about a month ago:

I can only think that his ameliorating the athletic department's financial situation was the reason.

Saal has to be sweating what's going on with the basketball team. That's been the most nationally known face of the university for about 20 years or more. And it's an embarrassment right now.

But I based what I said on the following. When I would travel in the 90s, nobody I ever talked to knew WSU by its basketball team.

When I travel now, most people know WSU by its basketball team.
