Wichita State (8-1) at DePaul (7-2) Game Discussion: Dec 14 (Sat)
I was watching bits and pieces of the replay this morning. With 7:34 left there was a controversial out of bounds call. The loose ball literally fell into the hands of a DePaul player who was standing with both feet out of bounds and somehow DePaul was awarded the ball. It was a pivotal possession that DePaul ended up scoring on.
Shocker fan for life after witnessing my first game in person, the 80-74 win over the #12 Creighton Bluejays at the Kansas Coliseum.
Point guard lay was awful and 2 junior college players Bell and Beverly were doing the drive into double teams. Time for Zion!
This will always be the case. Bell is literally a JUCO player and only performs JUCO abilities… like constantly bullrushing into the lane and getting rejected or garbage is thrown up. And Mills wants that cuz it ain’t changing. Such shitty basketball.
I’ve been trying to figure out, and would love to hear the explanation from PM, as to why AJM only played 8 minutes. He’s not that much of a defensive liability (imo), and when the team was struggling on offense in the second half, it sure seemed necessary to have a scorer in the game. He was 1 for 1 from 3.
I wonder if PM goes brain dead during games, which I guess can happen, lots to think about. Isn’t that what assistants are for, remind the HC of this and that? Maybe they are doing it, who knows.
It’s as if he wants the statistical metrics to work things out, and not actual common sense basketball.
What do I know. But I am a little tired of the on the job training we are providing. It’s what we have though, and it isn’t going to change anytime soon.
Mills offense has some pick-n-rolls, but it's mostly spacing to allow perimeter players to drive to the basket. He's got the perimeter players who LOVE to drive to the basket, and he's got some guys who can execute some pretty good pick-n-rolls, but there's a catastrophic breakdown.
When the defense collapses on the drivers, cutters, or rollers, the idea is to pass to an open 3 shooter. We have open 3 shooters. Unfortunately those guys are 3 missers, not makers. Then the open 3 shooter either flings up a brick and retreats on D to cut off a transition basket, or, quite often, tries to drive to the basket to repeat the process that didn't work on the first try.
I'm not any kind of a fan who can analyze of even understand offenses very well. I think I understand enough to recognize that spread offenses don't work well if the guys spreading the defense can't make shots from where they're set up to space the offense.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades. We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Shox have shot 43% and 47% on 3's over the last two games. That is good shooting. Problem I see is that there is no motion and little passing. Dribblers cause little to no movement by the defense, especially when offense is standing around with little to no movement. Passing the ball requires the defense to move more quickly especially when involving all players in all sectors of the court. That defensive movement opens door to cut to the basket as well as opens up the chance to take good open 3's as opposed to quick shots.
I believe this team does have good shooters when they don't have to rush their shots.
This last game was prime example. DePaul sagged in the first half because they knew we have been a poor 3 shooting team, and we hit like 5/7 ( I believe). They tightened up the d on the perimeter in the second half, which took away our ability to get good 3's with time to shoot.
Moving the ball from corner to corner, high post low post and all points in between, would have given opportunity for more 3's in the second half and more assists to open guys all over the court.

And ShockerFever, " This will always be the case. Bell is literally a JUCO player and only performs JUCO abilities… like constantly bullrushing into the lane and getting rejected or garbage is thrown up.'
Bell played at Drexel and Beverly spent 4 years with the Miami Hurricane. Neither played any JUCO ball.
We've also had a number very good to great JUCOs do very, very well, so your remarks are kind of a slam on them.
Play "like Juco"??? You can blame that on the coaches.

Definitely a headscratcher regarding McGinnis. The whole team was a defensive liability yesterday and DePaul packed the paint in the second half so WSU needed three point shooting. In those situations guys like Beverly and Bell (who exclusively drive to the hoop) should not be in the game.

Nearly every out of bounds was off a DePaul player. Reffing was horrible.

Who else posts fake **** all day in order to maintain the acrimony? Wingnuts, that's who.
Had my own game to work yesterday, so watched the taped version.
Pretty obvious the WSU game plan was to stop Skogman in the paint.
Ok, they accomplished that, but forgot about the other 4 players on the floor.
Give Holtman credit, he saw it right away and adjusted his offense - and it worked!
BIG Time!
I don't know how many times the Gunn kid had to bomb away and nothing was adjusted to address it. It was like they made up their mind about Skogman and that was it.
The interior depth thing came back to haunt them yesterday (MB was a total mismatch disaster inside against them).
This lack of interior depth has the potential to take this season and go off the rails during conference play.
Ok, ok, they will beat up UMKC and our Friends at Friends, but after that...KState?
Don't think so.
Then the meat grinder of conference play kicks in.
HCPM better get some good news about certain players health and soon!
