Wichita State Basketball: New Leadership and Bold Expectations Ahead

    By BVM Sportsdesk
    10/15/24, 1:00pm cst

"Wichita State basketball enters its second year under coaches Paul Mills and Terry Nooner with improved expectations after a foundational season in the American Athletic Conference. Both coaches discussed their focus on enhancing team experience, defensive play, and overall performance during the AAC Basketball Media Days. With a mix of returning players and new transfers, both teams aim to significantly improve on last season's disappointing records.

    By the Numbers
    • The men's team finished last season with a 15-19 record and was ranked fourth in the AAC coaches poll for the upcoming season.
    • The women's team had a 10-22 record, being picked 12th in the same poll.
    • The men's free throw shooting improved from 69.7% last season to 77% in recent scrimmages.
    Yes, But
Despite their higher expectations, both teams face the challenge of overcoming strong competition within the AAC, where 29% of games were decided by four points or fewer last season.

    State of Play
    • Coaches emphasized improved defense during summer workouts, indicating a strategic shift for both teams.
    • Men's team scrimmages against Oklahoma State showed competitive physicality compared to the previous season.
    What's Next
Fans can expect an accelerated and aggressive style of play as both teams aim to establish themselves in the AAC. Adjustments in strategy and roster depth will be critical as they begin their respective seasons.

    Bottom Line
Wichita State basketball is poised for a resurgence, driven by improved coaching and player experience. Expect a focus on defensively-minded, fast-paced gameplay aimed at exceeding last season's underwhelming results.

Meeks…I don’t see crutches, although he’s riding in a cart. I do see a band-aid where he was scoped. Do see his knee is bent. Meniscus surgeries do take a while to heal. I know mine did. Hopefully, he’s a quick healer.
