  • How good will Cleanthony Early be when he "gets it?"

Early is currently our third-best scorer with 11.5 PPG. He is also averaging 5.5 RPG and 2 BPG on just 22.5 minutes a play. After Early, we have a huge drop off to Armstead (6.5 PPG) and Orukpe (4 PPG, which is 5th most on our team).

To my eyes, Early hasn't had a "good" game yet. His excellent free-throw shooting has given him some points, but his shots really haven't started to fall. How many points do you think he will get once he fully adjusts to the D1 game and starts hitting those open jumpers?

I think he will be the type of player that can take over a game when it comes down to the crunch time. I see a consistent 17 ppg season this year. And possibly 20+ next year.

With his ups, he plays as "tall" or taller than most centers in the Valley. He's quicker, and faster than most SF's in the MVC. Hi history indicates he can be about a 35% shooter from 3.

I'd hate to project any numbers for him because of the way Marshall runs the offense, but it will be interesting to compare stats between Dougie McD and "Animal" Early next year. I will predict that Early gets more blocks in a single game than McD gets in an entire season. I would not be surprised if Early is the best PF in the league THIS season.

With Dougie's ole defense and Orukpe's big body keeping Echenique out of the area, Early could have massive numbers against CU this year.

Dude scored 13 points last night off the bench and in my eyes played so-so. Armstead threw one up for him to dunk, but Cle didn't understand the nonverbal cue and totally whiffed. But when his shots start dropping and when everyone on the team is on the same page, look out. I agree with @ShockerPrez:--we could be looking at consistent 20+. And next year, holy smokes, 30+ games might not be out of the ordinary. He could have the ability to totally take over games singlehandedly.

By lunchtime there are going to be at least a couple Final Four threads....breath deep. Lots to be excited about, even more things to work on.

But it was a very good win.

Let's compare some recent Jucos in their first 2 games:

                    C. Hannah (1) 54 min - 6-19 FG - 3-6 FT - 1 OReb - 3 TReb - 9 A - 6 TO - 0 Blk - 0 Stl - 19 Points

                    Clemente (4/5) 46 min - 4-9 FG - 2-5 FT - 7 OReb - 20 TReb - 3 A - 4 TO - 0 Blk - 1 Stl - 10 Points

                    Cle Early (3/4) 45 min - 9-19 FG - 5-6 FT - 6 OReb - 11 TReb - 1 A - 4 TO - 4 Blk - 1 Stl - 23 Points

                    Carl Hall (4/5) 35 min - 6-10 FG - 2-4 FT - 6 OReb - 13 TReb - 1 A - 0 TO - 2 Blk - 1 Stl - 14 Points

                    Gabe Blair (4) 32 min - 5-12 FG - 3-4 FT - 3 OReb -- 8 TReb - 2 A - 1 TO - 0 Blk - 2 Stl - 13 Points

                    J. Ragland (1) 31 min - 4-9 FG - 3-3 FT - 0 OReb --- 2 TReb - 5 A - 3 TO - 0 Blk - 0 Stl - 14 Points

                    Ben Smith (3) 26 min - 3-6 FG - 2-3 FT - 1 OReb --- 3 TReb - 3 A - 2 TO - 1 Blk - 0 Stl - 14 Points

Of course we have a lot of different positions being played and only Blair and Hannah play 2 "weaker" teams. The rest all had 1 quality team.

Make your own judgements if you wish to do so this Early, but I think Cle is doing very well.

I think we're all getting a little ahead of ourselves. While GM is coach I doubt we'll ever see a 20 ppg scorer.

Blair was a transfer, not a JUCO.

Early is very gifted athletically and will be important to the Shockers success this season.

Thanks for helping the aged. I was so intent on "how fast Jucos pick up the program", it didn't even click in. I guess it's not that bad having him in that group as he did have to learn a new structure plus he had an extra year to do it.

His jump shot makes me cringe. His shot is flatter than anything I remember seeing from Cooz and that used to drive a lot of people nuts. But he's going to be one hell of a player eventually.

From today's Wichita Eagle -- "WSU junior Cleanthony Early said. “On paper, they try to say we’re a bunch of new guys that aren’t that good. But Coach made a statement that they can’t read our heart.”
