Here is the formula used to get the Prouty Ratings.

Prouty Rating = [Offensive Efficiency + Total Offense + Possessions Gained + Win Rating] / 4

Offensive Efficiency = TP / (FGA*2 + FTA)
Total Offense = (TP + A*2 - TO) / Player MIN
Possessions Gained = (REB + S + BLK/2 - PF) / Player MIN
Win Rating = Player MIN / (Team MIN / 5) * (Wins / Game #)

You'd have to come up with a formula that included defensive rebounds, steals, blocks, and forced turnovers, etc. Currently, the Prouty rating includes all rebounds and blocks, steals, and personal fouls as part of possessions gained, which is 1/4 of the Prouty rating.

Unfortunately, these statistics do not really reflect a player's defensive skills and abilities, at least that lead to any meaningful ranking. A rebound, for example, has little or nothing to do with the rebounder's defensive ability -- most likely, it was a teammate that provided the defense that resulted in the opportunity for a rebound (a missed shot). A block is fun to watch, but unless the blocker or a teammate retrieves the errant ball, the block of a player shooting a out-of-position shot may result in an even better in-bounds play for the opposing team.

A steal may well resemble some form of defense, but a player with 3.0 steals per game may leave his man open for easy shots if he makes 15 wild attempts to steal the ball and misses on 12 of them. Personal fouls likewise often reflect the player making up for a teammates mistake and sometimes is a very positive situation (preventing a layup and having the big guy miss one or both of the free throws.

A steal is credited to player A of Team A batting the ball from an opponent in control if Team A obtains possession of the batted ball. There is no steal credited if the opponents retain the ball (as it should be). Player A might bat or deflect 25 balls a game and have zero steals credited, while teammate B may bat one single ball that results in possession and be credited with one steal, but may let his opponent dribble by him for easy layups 10 times during the game. The stats would show Player B as the better defender. That, I think, is why 3G counts "deflections." I heard that he wants 45 deflections per game. Theory, if nothing else, 45 deflections are going to disrupt the flow and some may result in turnovers and/or steals.
