I also agree with this unfortunately. That's NIL for ya.

I am expecting 1-2 unwanted....just based on history.

      • What's the over/under on AAC portal players who end up at Memphis?

          • I get having high character guys and good kids on the roster. But if they aren’t AAC-level then what’s the point? Can’t we have good guys with talent too?

We’ve complained all year how bad this was going. I’m not sure you’ll get significant player development year over year like that unless miracles happen. So if you wanna win more games, it starts with the personnel. That’s just a fact. Nothing personal.

Does it depend on their rap sheet as well as their stat sheet?

You'll get no disagreement with me. Except (maybe) that I believe both are absolutely AAC level talent. Not All Conference, and not without flaws, but both bring skill sets that cause problems for the other guy (in the AAC). And I would say getting to the basket and finishing is a strength for both, so if anything, in a perfect world, you'd just want one of the 2? I am not advocating for character to be the only or most important quality. Just since they're already here....ups my support level I guess.

With NIL and transfer rules, I don't believe we can be competitive at the national level without a big time player or 2. We aren't going to get those guys with our NIL money. So my thinking is that you have to take the best you can get ( which is currently 3* or below) keep them for 3 or 4 yrs and develop them to NBA caliber kids. Yes it will take time, but the foundation will be much stronger than year after year resets of 3* and below players.

Following your premise. We don't have big NIL money (I agree). So we get this best 3 star and below talent we can bring in the door. Develop that talent over 3-4 years to NBA caliber. Again we don't have NIL money. The issue is if these players develop anywhere near NBA caliber or even good high major talent then you're not going to keep them over 3-4 years. The bottom line is the vast majority of players want to be compensated for their open market value.

This isn't fantasy football or basketball. We are not Kentucky, Texas or any other school that can bring in 5* recruits and transfer guys that are already expected to be NBA talent.
WSU will have to show they can develop 3* guys into NBA talent, which can take a couple of years. Once you show you can do that, the occasional 4* guys will start coming.
If you're implying it would be wise to stick with HCIB's recruits you are absolutely correct. If not, HCPM is going to have to prove he can replace the all time leader in 3's for a season and one of the best defensive bigs in D1 if they leave. Now before any Karen jumps in I'm not saying he can't but just that he hasn't yet. Who knows maybe he'll surprise us all and be able to attract a Mississippi Player of the Year type in this modern NIL dystopia we are now in.

                      • Mills is going to have to develop a couple key players into All League level players without NIL. If he can do that, and get us in the top 5 of the conference, I think the NIL will open up to keep those players and it's something we can build on. I don't think there's a lot of people interested in just dumping money into unknown hired guns.

                        • Received my SASO renewal in the mail today. I plan on renewing, but it would be nice to know what the team will look like before they send this out. I'll be waiting a few weeks to send it in.

I'll probably walk it in on May 1.

I understand the risk of loosing guys while developing them. But I would hope that a guy who is developing positively would consider past and future development , his status with his current team along with the uncertainty of transferring to another school, in making a decision. If a guy is having a positive experience in his relationships, school and development, I believe he will have a tougher time transferring out.
