  • Valentine's Day 2006

I am sure that more than one person woke up this morning and wondered what Doc remembers about this day in Shocker history.

With his permission, let's take a look at his memories of what he did (or more accurately, didn't do) on Valentine's Day 2006.

February 14, 2006. Bradley beats SIU in Peoria..ok not a huge deal. Lowly Indiana State beats UNI. Hey, WSU could win at home against CU and be in first place in the Valley. At least 17 seasons of frustration, but mostly 4 seasons of almost getting there but never winning a BIG game was standing in front of us, ready to explode.

After completely giving away the game in regulation with a lack of desire to get 1 lousy rebound, PJ Couisnard goes to the line to tie it with 2 FTs. First one, clank. Doc snaps. I probably missed like 4 home games from '79 until today ( I only remember 2, the Indiana State loss in 2004 maybe and Eastern Washington early one year when I was out of town). For some reason, the thought of almost getting there but yet again falling short, especially to a CU team that started 4 guys with a combined vertical of about 6mm and 1 girl, sent me over the edge.

Without warning, I spun out of my seat, up the stairs, around the concourse, a peek in to see the Creighton girl make her 1st free throw, and then out the door to get to my car, leaving my family behind. If I told you I may have muttered 1 or 2 expletives that would be another lie. I spewed forth vile commentary that was deserving of ticket revocation from the instant I headed up the stairs until I turned the radio on. It was childish and embarrassing. But the weight of all those years and all those failures, combined with my passion for the men's program had reached a crescendo, and at that moment, I failed miserably as a fan. My punishment....missing perhaps the greatest shot ever in CKA. @WuShock16: is one of a very few people that knew this until today.

I hope you suffer in the belly of Sarlacc until we return to the Final Four for making me relive this moment.

That was an amazing game. MB had the love and admiration of so many Shocker fans because he left it all on the floor. But mostly, and when I watch it in slow motion, for one 1/16 of a second I'm able to say

I was officiating a couple of sub-varsity games at Circle that night. We had a radio in the officials room listening to the end of the game. Pretty sure the varsity officials delayed the start of the 2nd half of the boys game to hear the end of regulation. Or maybe it was OT. Either way, nobody wanted to miss the ending.

I know the FSU NIT game is often referred to has the loudest game and I generally agree because it was pretty loud throughout but when Matty B hit that 3 that might single loudest moment I’ve ever experienced at the roundhouse. Easily one of my favorite moments during my season ticket days.
If you're not going to go all the way, why go?

Jamar's corner 3 against FSU was close.

Matty B. Reminds us of the value of a solid point guard. What a heroic and extra effort he and the Shockers displayed. Our Shockers were happy to dive on the floor for loose balls with fierce efforts. Great memories.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Doc talked about this when we reminisced about 2004 SIU a couple weeks ago. There was a hunger in the crowd that you just cannot replicate when you win all the time. WSU had not won in so long, and even though the program was vastly improved, it still could not get over the hump, losing some big games in heartbreaking manner. MattyB’s shot exercised many of those demons, and the crowd’s reaction was indicative of that.

I was in elementary school and had been going to games for two seasons but looking back this is one of the first Shocker bball memories that is seared into my mind. My sister and I made a, "We <3 to HATE Creighton" sign for the occasion. One of my favorite childhood memories and I think this is the game turned me into a Shocker junkie.

Yeah. Our palates have been officially cleansed. We are hungry for a winner again.

For sure. If he could have played 2 years later for a full season GGG might have (would have) had a better start to his WSU career on the sideline...

Tim Pickett had a hell of a game for FSU as well.
