    • Mills has some gumption. After Kevin Bacon finished his facial (no sex jokes please), Mills happened to be in the same spa/barbershop. Bacon ask Mills if he was going to also get a facial, and Mills said, "No because I don't wear panties."

There are always the Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton stories. Those players are definitely needed on a team. But we also need the FVV, the Landry Shamet, the Markis McDuffie type players to really be competitive. Those are the players that normally the recruiting services say are good. They aren't always right, they miss both directions, but in general, if you are getting a Top 150 player, you are more likely to get success from them than trying to find the diamond in a rough.

Though the counter point now is that you might actually need a Top 50 ish player if you really want them to impact before the portal gets them, otherwise landing a proven player or two in the portal might be the better way.
You had me at FVV and LS, but lost me on MM. I don't know what MM was "ranked" coming out of high school, but I would take one RB and one TC over a dozen MMs. Are there any other choices besides FVV and LS?

MM is miles better than any player not named Rogers on our roster. He's the kind of recruit Mills needs to bring in. If (big one) he can do that then there is hope.

          • Five year contracts are a problem unless you are sure you have struck oil. IB was a miss and PM is off to a pretty bad start. My interest in college basketball has declined quite a bit since the portal and NIL have come into play. Still watch EVERY WSU game but with less enthusiasm and fewer college games in general.

            • McDuffie was Top 100 or very close. And yes, he's miles ahead of anyone on this roster.

I'm with you. Between NIL, the portal, and IB, my interest has waned over the last three years. I had hopes Mills would get off to a better start and get me out of my funk, but so far, Shocker BB is as cold as my normally warm Texas day is today. I watch all the games too, but nowadays I find I can multi-task while the game is on. Used to, I was glued to the tv for the entirety of the game. Used to be a dunk, a three, or a steal would fire me up, but this season those things almost seem like accidents.

We've swapped getting dunks, steals and 3's with our opponents. Now we let them do those things,

5 year contracts are fine and probably needed for recruiting past year 1. The thing that needs to happen though is it needs to have very favorable buyout language in years 3-5.

I wonder how much it really matters anymore when players are hopping around every year.

Wondering just how "important" the 5-year deal for coaches is to players anymore. If a coach is doing well, players are more likely to stay, and an extension can always be made to the coach. Very favorable buyout language is not a selling point to players either. For many players, even if a team (not in the old P5/Big East) is doing well, they can leave for what they believe is greener pastures or can be picked-off by those teams anyway if they believe it benefits them. Favorable buyout language is not going to be a plus for recruitment in years 2 or 3. Seems to me that some sort of language within the contract needs to address quality player retention or quality replacement. The whole thing seems like a Catch-22.

It is too bad that the value of a good education (and it's actually costs) seem to be put aside as a value for the student athlete. No one is forcing the "student athlete" to play. Tell them that no one is stopping them from making money playing basketball.....go pro somewhere. College athletics is not that. If one decides to make money NOW, go pro in some fashion. This should be education first and getting it paid for by doing something the student loves to do and just may help them make money at it someday. No one says they have to stay 2, 3, or 4 years at that college or even in the collegiate system. The whole thing is F'd up.

One of those guys has a career of successes in his field spanning five decades. The other guy won more than 20 games once in six years as a head coach.

                            • The signing of the 2, guards by HCPM is impressive. I've watched TJ play since he was in Junior High. A friend of mine compared his game to Toure' Murry. Indeed TJ is a stat stuffer and plays solid D. I do recall this Shocker player who had no stars by his name. He played a few years for the Knicks. Ron Baker. He was a Maker.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

I agree on it might not matter because the players can hop anyways, but i still think a 3 year contract vs a 5 year with favorable buyout language is still worse from a recruiting standpoint. Most players are likely to know exactly how long the coach is under contract. I'm not as convinced they will know the exact buyout terms and even then that would require a move to be made vs the other way around where a move has to be made to keep the coach.

Probably right though that neither matters since players seem to be thinking its a year to year thing anyways when they commit.
