My point is the private money was there, but now is not there. I would argue we lost boosters because they fired 3G, not because of his behavior leading up to that.

I recall a large newspaper ad with A LOT of "big money" supporters that were backing GM.

      • I watched that game. And then the interim coach went out and knocked off #2 Purdue. Will wait to see if he gets the full time job, but the dude was coaching-coaching during the game - not giving post games about lack of fire, motivation, game prep. Almost looked like he was praying when he would go down on his knee during the game. Was visibly engaging his players and emotional in the win.

Running a little skincare biz out of the crib eh? I wonder if we're as diligent with codes, taxes, and licensure as we are with putting our big, fat, ****ing nose in matters way outside our paygrade?

We call that the Smart Money in our world.

I would think obtaining that newspaper ad and contacting all the names listed, would be a solid first step towards increasing the pressure on the administration. With the constant screeching interference of Wokeness finally dissipating, perhaps wisdom, experience, and... SANITY can prevail again.

If the big supporters know they're not throwing good money after bad, they'll step up in a big way. LOTS of wealth lying around these days with the irrational exuberance being represented in the stock market. It's a great time to sell a little off the top. $5-10M raise to buy some players (and a coach) wouldn't be hard. But you've got to bring the boys (and girls) back. Apologize for the incompetence, and kiss all the rings.

Lot of dry powder friend, trust me...

What to do about the current SACKLESS INTERIM QUALITY coach with a contract though?

I shouldn't have said sackless. He did tell Kevin Bacon off in a barber shop once.

I'd like to see a cage match between HCGM and Mills.

I don't think Mills would last past the battle cry...

              Winner.

              • There is NO reason why we can't be neck and neck with Memphis. We have the tradition, the resources, and the fanbase.

Like WSU and BJ in the MVC; WSU and MSU can be the rising tide that lifts all boats. The lighthouse by which all other conference members set their navigation.

But as it stands right now, Memphis will eventually leave and the AAC will be finished.

Our utter incompetence will be the reason it all eventually comes to pass.

                THAT's what's riding on our program's success.

                • Someone has to want Memphis in order for them to leave. They'd never get into the B1G or the SEC. The XII has had every opportunity to add them and passed. I guess if the ACC falls apart and is scrambling they may get a chance there.

It doesn't matter whether they keep their football in the AAC, or drop down, or go indy; their basketball fans are serious and they will jump ship anywhere that improves their program's outlook. Just as we entered the AAC basketball-only, that future for the Tigers is not out of the question in the B12, ACC, or maybe even the Priest. Hell, if it gets bad enough, the A10 starts looking good.

So, just as it was in the MVC, the conference now rests on our shoulders. Two nationally ranked teams is enough to keep a conference alive - even promote it in the right markets. The AAC has the right markets, just the wrong teams - except for us, Memphis, and Temple.

When we joined the AAC we actually had other teams that would carry the conference. Our probability for sustained success increases exponentially in that scenario. Those were the days.

The clock is ticking. There may be time for one more MASSIVE effort in this city to save the program. Three more years of post-Marshall-quality basketball and we will be finished.

The boosters need to shake off the apathy and take back control of the reigns. Clean house if necessary. But the tail needs to stop wagging the dog. This is a money problem, first and foremost.

Nothing is off the table with financial commitment (that includes paying for three previous basketball coaches).

How bad do you want it Wichita?

You can't separate football and basketball unless your home conference doesn't sponsor football. So any conference that would take them would have to take their football. And none of those conferences are clamoring for their basketball. If Memphis wanted to leave for the BE (would never accept Memphis) or the A10 (major media paycut) they'd have to go independent in football or hope for an affiliate membership in the MAC or something. The AAC wouldn't allow it, just like they didn't allow UCon to place football here.

The XII is more likely to add San Diego State or UNLV/Nevada than they are Memphis. USF probably has a better shot at the XII.

The ACC is their best shot, but it will take heavy turmoil and the loss of a number of schools for the ACC to consider opening their doors to Memphis.

The AAC isn't near as bad as you try to portray it. Memphis fans may want out, but none of the doors they're going to knock on are going to be answered.

Never say never. Most of the "rules" you state have no teeth. If we've learned anything over the last couple years, it's that anything is possible with money.

Everybody has left the AAC, thus the AAC has no teeth either.

Memphis basketball has cachet. And they've proven they can easily adapt to the NIL system.

IMO... it's up to us to keep them in the AAC and build something out of this trailer park conference. We need Temple to get nationally competitive again as well.

Wichita State, Memphis, Temple... kinda like, Wichita State, BJ, UNI.

The rest is directional garbage and/or smells like JUCO.

Maybe we have 3 years left. Maybe. The WSU-ICAA lost $6.7 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023. That included $5 million for coaches severance pay which are booked at the time the obligation is incurred and is contractually set even though actual payments are made over the remaining term of those contracts. The point is that even with ignoring the severance pay hit the WSU-ICAA had a net operating deficit of $1.7 million for fiscal 2023. See: https://goshockers.com/documents/202.../ISSUED_FS.pdf

Nothing I have observed for the current fiscal year indicates that will change for the better in the current fiscal year. In fact, based on what appears to be a continuing decline in ticket revenues and SASO membership revenue that deficit my well be larger in 2024 unless there is some significant fundraising going on behind the scenes that is not yet public knowledge. The financial statements for fiscal year ending June 30, 2024 should be out in late September or early October. A repeat of fiscal 23 will mean the WSU-ICAA will be technically insolvent (liabilities exceeding their assets).

When you say "How bad do you want it Wichita?" I am not sure who exactly you are referring to. I do agree that the wealth does exist to deal with this situation if the motivation exists. But that wealth is pretty concentrated. Not sure what it will take to create that motivation or if that is even a possibility. With 3G still living in Wichita and palling around and playing golf, etc. with these wealthy boosters that doesn't help the needed healing and forgiveness to take place. If these wealthy former boosters don't get back on board not sure it makes that much difference what the rest of the general populace wants. It would be interesting to know how much money from the Wichita area goes to KU, KSU and other Kansas colleges and how much goes to Wichita State.

Furthermore, college athletics has changed drastically since 3G was ejected. Now not only do you have to shell out big bucks to attract a coach and hope he works out (and be prepared for a big buyout if he doesn't work out), now you have to buy on the court talent who may or may not hang around for more than a year. In addition, the entire infrastructure of college sports is in turmoil and constantly changing adding even more uncertainty and making it very difficult to evaluate the end game. Not to mention that we seemingly have more of that in our future.

No doubt there is plenty of money looking for the best, most favored place to make a currently deductible charitable contribution and reduction in the value of a taxable estate down the road and maybe get your name on a building. The challenge for ADKS and WSUP Muma is to convince that money that Wichita State Athletics is the best choice of a myriad of other competing options for a chunk of that money. They have a real challenge on their hands.

                              Stop trolling me Subby!

Memphis is the best program in the conference and it's not even close.

And where we stand now, I don't even know if we are 2nd...

Of course if you consider football, we aren't 2nd. But we are talking about "name programs" with national recognition.

Basketball still matters to fans - thus conferences. Television is more concerned with easily packageable product. Conferences are concerned with keeping their alumni happy AND the networks. I don't care what FAUABUTSA does on the gridiron, they aren't getting ahead of Memphis on the list of suitable candidates.
