  • Your 2012-13 Wichita State Shocker starting line-up

Tons of possibilities, this year but I'll take a stab at my starting 5:

    PG - Armstead
    SG - Williams
    SF - Early
    PF - Hall
    C - Orukpe

That's my best guess, but I'm not totally sold on it. Wiggins and maybe Lufile could slide into the starting line-up at some point during the season.

Rather than add another thread I was thinking of posting, I'll piggyback on yours @wufan:. You think there are a ton of possibilities coming up with just the starting line-up, here's some more Shocker line-ups to consider (and for everyone to post their thoughts) :

    The "Going Big" line-up.
    The "Going Small" line-up.
    The "Lockdown D" line-up.
The "Run the Other Team Into the Ground" line-up.
    The "Zone Buster" line-up.
Who will be that special "Man Off the Bench".

This team has so many mouth-watering choices to choose from it's really pretty mind boggling. My only real fear is how long it will take this team to gel and find that special chemistry that will take them to that next level.

Your guess is about as good as could be logically expected, wufan. But, there's always those surprises. Also, what may be the starting line-up at the beginning of the season and how it will look at the end or even half way through season could be very different. If you don't get your hopes up too high early, I think this will be a very fun ride.

My hope for this team is that the starting line-up turns out to be relatively unimportant.

I would like to see a "Run the Other Team Into the Ground" kind of team that does that through depth and flexibility and not so much through a select 5 players. Whether or not we will see that is still just a hope. Only time will tell for sure whether we have the pieces to be this deep, flexible team.

Here are the 2011-2012 season Net plus/minus per 40 and Prouty ratings for the returning players.

Player Net +/- per 40 Prouty
            Wessel 35.1 0.224
            Williams 12.0 0.371
            Orukpe 12.4 0.248
            Hall 13.8 0.396
            Cotton 9.3 0.311
            White 22.3 0.246

Of course, how much you play, when you play, and who you play against can have a big impact on certain numbers. Interestingly, those that played the most had the best Prouty numbers and worst +/-, as well as the reverse for those who played the least. Only one player in your list did not fair high in at least one category....EO.

Who will start? Who will finish? Who will play the most minutes? These questions may all have different answers. Wiggins(could be one of our best scorers), Armstead (could be a top defender) Williams(quick on quick with experience but he is no lock. Will his injury put him slightly behind the 8 ball?), Hall( he could doulble his bounds and points per game as Stutz did?) and Early(he is adapting to this level but should be solid when the bright lights shine) may start.

Here are the players I noticed this summer that could also start some games and or get plenty on minutes. Baker the Maker(could be our best shooter), FVV(should be our top assist man and he can score), Cotton(good things happen when he checks into a game for us) Chadrack (this was a very, very key signing for us) Jake (he is improving and can stroke it).

Wessel(hustles and has improved), EO( half the time this summer he looked solid and other times he seemed more of a 7-12 minute player), and Joe (when he is hot, he is on fire), and Green(he may redshirt?, but is a keeper). Everybody will get a fair shot and the competition level will be fierce and ongoing.

I think the coach might go with two point guards like he's done in the past.

At the beginning of the season, I could see Armstead and FVV starting with either Wiggins or Cle at the wing with Beast and EO down low. That would pretty much guarantee some scoring along with some capable defenders. It would also give FVV a chance to get his feet wet without having to completely take over. It should be quite clear that FVV is the future of this program.

If FVV can knock DWill out of a starting spot at the beginning of the season, then FVV is the NOW of the program and will be for 4 years. I can only see that happening if DWill has trouble coming back from his injury.

OTOH, FVV played against every top PG in the nation in AAU between his Jr and Sr years, and by most accounts he beat all of them. There is some speculation that FVV played for the wrong HS and the wrong AAU team or he would have been a high 4 star for sure and possibly a 5 star. Some recruiting sources have reported FVV as one of the most underrated players in his class because he was only top-100.

I'm on Cotton's bandwagon, but I don't think he's going to take any minutes away from FVV this year or any other year they're both here.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

If FVV is the stud I believe he's going to be, we might not have him for 4 years, if you know what I mean. Somebody had to say it.

                            PG - Armstead

I love our depth at just about every position and look forward to Shocker Madness to see some of what the new guys bring to the team.

                            PG - Armstead/DWill/FVV/Cotton/Mitchell
                            SG - DWill/Wiggins/Cotton/Baker/Green
                            SF - Early/Wiggins/Cotton/Baker/Wessel/Green
                            PF - Hall/White/Lufile/Early
                            C - Ehimen/Hall/Lufile

I expect Green to RS. We know Bush and the ULL guy will. That still leaves 12 scholarship players looking for time. It will be interesting to see how the minutes get spread around.
