This is a tough point to make - it risks a lot of posters taking it the wrong way or reading something into it that I don't intend, but...
...EO learned basketball playing with Stutz, Murry, Kyles, Hatch, and some other "nice" players. I do NOT mean that as a criticism of those players. EO may be more likely to develop a "mean streak" or to become more aggressive and assertive with the current group on the team. Just like the word "nice" isn't a criticism, neither is the word "mean". I'm just using those words to describe two different styles of play.
It might lso make a difference if EO is practicing on the "starting" team instead of on the "scout" team. EO's role last year may have been to prepare Stutz and Hall for the opponent, rather than to prepare himself for the opponent. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

I get what you're saying, and while Hatch is a "nice" guy, he had that mean streak in him. I get it with the other three you mentioned though. I just wouldn't lump Hatch in there in this sense. He had no problem getting in there and mixing it up with people and played with little regard for his body.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

I never thought of Hatch as "nice guy". He was a warrior and played to his potential. Same for Stutz. Stutz looks soft because he was weak. I can assure you he wanted to turn and jam that ball on somebody every time he had it, but he simply couldn't. Paul Miller might make a better case for the "nice guy" award. However, he lost all the Fifi when he came back from Europe. He was definitely not a nice guy anymore. I thought he was going to hurt somebody that summer.
Don't confuse weakness with being nice.
