  • 1960's Starting Lineup

Who would you choose to start from a list of names from the 60's? I admit, it was before my time and I have a list of names for the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's if this goes over well. But the farther back I look, the harder it is to find names that may be worthy. I went through the All-Time Shockers that was voted on by the fans a few years ago and also went through the record books and put down every name I could find to add to the lists.

So here we are, vote for up to 5.

    Warren Armstrong (Jabali) G
    20.33%
    37
    Greg Carney G
    0.55%

    Ernie Moore G

    15
    Kelly Pete G
    10.44%
    19
    Dave Stallworth F
    20.33%
    37
    Jamie Thompson G-F
    15.38%

    Lanny Van Eman G

    Ron Washington G-F

    Gene Wiley C

Where is Nate Bowman? Does Simmy Hill count (he only played on the frosh team.) Obvious lack of big men. Dave Leach? Leonard Kelly?

      How about Melvin Reed?

Melvin was only a 6"5" center. A center, yes, but a big guy, not really

Oh I agree, but there are others in this group that had they all played together may have played different positions than they actually did as Shockers. Nevertheless, Reed was probably the 3rd best Shocker Center during that time. I also agree that Bowman should be on the list and I might have put him ahead of ahead of Wiley, well....just maybe.

I think I'd put Wiley ahead of Bowman, but just barely.

Those split seasons by several of the players drive me up a wall when evaluating. Also the difference in the quality of the teams they played on.

Ron Washington is probably underrated, but I went with Thompson. It was also hard not to go for Moore, but voted for Pete.

I figured there'd be missing names. Perhaps I should have put OTHER on the list in case that happened. I tried to find info but the farther back I went the more difficult it became. I was hoping to at least find some old rosters or something as I know certain names would have jumped out at me. It became pretty difficult without spending hours upon hours searching. I admit, I'm not always the best when it comes to doing searches like this. I don't have a huge list of those from the 70's either. But 80s and beyond I have at least 15 names in each to choose from. It's easier once I get into the 80s as at least those are names from my childhood I remember hearing about.

The only reason a name would have been left off of the list is because I didn't find their name in the record books or any lists of names I happened to find when searching. I'm sorry if a missing name should be on the list.

on goShockers.com, go to basketball page, click on Fact Book and go to pages 54-55, there is a complete all-time roster.

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

I missed that when skimming thru for info. I was going to start with the 50s but only had 6 names. I'll run through this and pull some names for the other decades that I may have missed. I may still end up doing one for the 50s. Was thinking about a pre 50s one, but that might be a stretch

I went for Ernie over Kelly put only because I wanted a pure point guard in my starting lineup. Warren could no doubt handle that chore but Warren could help you in many other ways also and would want him to have the freedom to roam wherever he wanted. That was my toughest choice.

Nate Bowman should also have been on the list, although I would have probably still gone with Gene Wiley.

After going to the site Im4wsu posted I found three other names that may be worthy of consideration although they only played in that decade briefly..........Ron Harris, Ron Heller and Terry Benton.

With the list provided, I picked Ernie Moore, Jamie Thompson, Armstrong, Stallworth, and Wiley. What a team that would be.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.
