I think that we have 3 true point guards and one who can play combo guard, Williams. To me that leaves wessel on the bench or redshirted which he should have done last year and take your pick between FVV Mitchell Baker and Cotton as guys who can either share a limited number of minutes or possibly redshirt. Baker can't redshirt because he did already. If its absolutely not possible that it could be van vleet, then its either Mitchell or Cotton. Those are older guys. That was my thinking on it being possible with van vleet. It sure would be awesome to have a freshman so good that he knocks a decorated juco with a years experience out of the lineup and cotton is awfully solid
I'm not trying to be disagreeable. I don't know how all of our good guards fit together but here are some facts that do not allow me to see any way that FVV redshirts, unless he is a bust that we have misjudged. He was a top 100, 4 star, true point guard (one of only two true pg's on the team). While not a superior athlete, he is a very good athlete, and he'll be next year's starting point guard (again he is the only returning true pg on the team). He sure looks like he has a superior basketball IQ, is a true leader, appears to be physically ready to play right now, and mature beyond his freshman years. The other guards you mentioned, some years would be our best pg option, this year could be a third point guard filling in as the pg with different roles (perhaps defensively pressing, etc.). I think that the competition for the 2 guard could be the best we've ever had, and I don't know how it'll turn out, but it is great to have options.

Who are your three true PGs? 1. Armstead, 2. VanVleet. Mitchell? Cotton? Is one of those two incapable of playing SG and one incapable of the PG?

        • Williams was the third who can also play combo guard. What I meant is armstead and dwill will start 1 and 2 probably but after some rotating subbing, dwill might actually be armsteads backup, which leaves limited minutes for those other names....and etc....also I meant that those guys are battling for the subbing minutes from Williams at SG, not that they are all pgs

          • I like the point that FVV needs to play now for next years sake. That is very true

            • Fred Van Vleet will NOT redshirt, those that think there is even a remote chance are very naive.

              • Thank you for that... I was just thinking out loud not developing some kind of position.

                  • FVV just got here. I've seen him play against and with Armstead (with HCGM running a summer practice). Armstead is wayyy ahead of FVV right now. Armstead is a man who played well on a BCS team, FVV is a recent HS graduate.

Are you saying that Marshall will only play one point guard? I didn't read one statement that FVV was better than Armstead. Marshall will probably play 10 players significant minutes if they show that they can play.

                        • Right now, I'd still say that Cotton and DWill are ahead of FVV on the depth chart at PG. There's time for that to change, but I don't see FVV playing 15-20 this season.

This is almost as strong of an endorsement as one from dofo.

                            • I'll rely on HCGM as to whether FVV will redshirt or not. He said on one occasion on one of his coach's shows that FVV is mature enough that he won't need to redshirt. Of course things can always change, as nothing is set in stone.

                              • Yeah i agree that he us probably ready to go. He is obviously a great player coming in. I was thinking from more of a roster management side if we find out that everyone else is doing great too and has their own stake in the lineup plus some seniority. I'm not dogging on FVV at all. I am super excited about FVV. I could have done without condescending remarks earlier but I understand. I just love following wsu and brainstorming about stuff. I don't have the need to be on record as always being right or something. Hey its stuff to think about and until we get the real facts when things get up and running we are all just waiting anyway
