    • Man we really killed this thread :) I take my share of the responsibility. It was a good one too with all the videos and observations.

I thought of something today. Either in the article in the eagle about our boys getting stronger or maybe in shockwaves q&a with the recruits, I think FVV said they do a lot of matching up with him on Armstead at point guard and a lot of matching up DWill on Mitchell.
Some have been kicking around the idea that Baker is really good too...even a potential big contributor at SG, but it got me thinking maybe coach might have the 4 above thinking they will carry the load at guard and maybe Baker is getting groomed to be a Hatch-like backup to Early and Wiggy at 3. It might be better for our depth to have him be a sniper wing guard instead of a straight 2. I don't know. Just getting my fix for the day with some dreaming

      • I believe those matchups are in the pickup games, which do not involve the coaches. When Baker has appeared in the videos, he's definitely hanging around outside and at or above the FT line (like a SG) and not spending a lot of time on the baseline (like a SF).

I think if one of what we consider the guards was playing at SF, it would be Williams because of his ability to drive to the hoop. Then I'd expect we'd see Baker at SG. That would be a situation where a small lineup and outside shooting were called for. Might even have Wiggins at PF if Marshall is really going small and quick with a lot of snipers for some reason.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

        • Yeah, that probably makes better sense. I need to quit thinking about it and wait to see anyway. A lot of this stuff is a dead horse until things ramp up and we get more info. I'm hoping we get another season like 10'-11' where the minutes are spread 10 deep, and the boys are unselfish. I loved reading the hype that its really hard to point out one star and you have to give the star power to the depth. I think back in the NIT thats what they said. It was like Washington State: this guy, Alabama: these 2 guys, Colorado: that guy...and Wichita State: uh, well we don't know who to watch cause everyone on the whole team averages the same amount of minutes and points and that is impossible to scout. Lo and behold, we stomped everybody and won it, too.

          • And yet again Tekele Cotton is the forgotten man on this board.

            • I'm just going off of the stuff I read. I still see Tekele as a big time player, too. I just noticed that he and Baker weren't mentioned in what I read so it made me wonder if there is some chemistry being developed that doesn't yet include Baker and Cotton. He is not forgotten. We just never seem to hear anything yet about him. To me its more that he is known quantity like Armstead and DWill. We already know he has a spot. Its the other guys who are new to us and its intriquing as to where they are at.

              • Tekele will be a good solid player, but not a big time player, he simply does not have enough offense. What offense he has seems to be good, but I don't think he will be turning in ppg that Clevin Hannah or Joe Ragland did.

FVV might steal some minutes from Tekele simply because he seems to have more offense.l

Maybe, maybe not. Love that we have FVV on board but based on how 3G stresses defense it may be just as likely that Tekele will "steal" a few minutes here and there himself. Not so much from FVV perhaps since they are not really at the same position. Tekele is physically mature, a tough defender, takes care of the ball and understands his role. Also, I think he may be a little better offensively than some think. We'll see.

If FVV steals any minutes it is more likely to be from Mal, D-Will and perhaps J-Mitch IMHO.

The great thing is that we seem to have so many options on the perimeter. The bad thing is we only have 120 minutes a game to share at the 1-2-3 positions. Somehow I see Tekele getting his share.

This is going to be a very, very intriguing season.

Cotton is a combo guard and there is no need to worry about his offense.

Just to give some reference on his offense, Tekele shot .508 from the field last year, which was 4th best on the team and 2nd best among guards (Joe being 1st). He also shot .348 from 3-point range which was tied for 3rd best on the team with David (Joe and Ben being 1st and 2nd). Furthermore, HCGM has mentioned that he has high expectations for Tekele's 3-point shooting, much in the same way he talked about David Kyle's potential.

Obviously, these numbers came from a small sample size, but he has already shown the ability to both attack the basket and hit the open jump shot. His role as a freshman was to be a defensive stopper, but that doesn't mean that the offensive ability isn't there.

                          • Cotton will definitely play a lot. He is a man out there and doesn't make mistakes. I don't expect any freshman to steal a lot of Cotton's minutes. The freshman have a lot to learn.

                            • I totally agree. I know people might not want to hear this but I think its more likely that FVV redshirts than he passes cotton on the depth chart as a freshman. Unless he is soooo good that we just have to play him. Might as well give him the best chance for a great career after all. I love redshirting guys cause we get to see them really reach their potential. Last full on 5 year guy we had was durley and he was awfully good towards the end. Cotton is good. I don't think anyone said otherwise. The question marks for me are Mitchell, Wessel, Baker and VanVleet...not DWill, Armstead and Cotton

Just as a follow up to the stats I posted in previously, I just wanted to point out that Tekele's .508 shooting percentage from the field is 70 points better than David Kyles ever shot from the field and his .348 shooting percentage from three is 32 points better than David as freshman and tied for the second best three point shooting season David ever had.

Given that as freshman Tekele and David saw similar minutes per game (David at 10.4 and Tekele at 9.9), similar scoring averages (David at 2.6 and Tekele at 2.9), and similar shot attempts (David at 64 and Tekele at 65), I have to wonder how much you thought David Kyles was an offensive disaster since Tekele as a freshman was pretty much a more efficient version of David as a freshman?
