Butler did open it's 2010 season at Cessna Stadium against #4 Navarro and drew around 6,500.

These numbers, the attendance for Hutch, and the remarkable fact that Butler doesn't even track attendance, are all fairly telling when you consider that you can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of juco football programs that are consistently stronger than Butler. Add in WSU's football tradition and attendance history, and it looks like club football is just about the right level for WSU.

And meanwhile, this still has nothing to do with WSU basketball, despite MoValley John's heroic efforts (hell of an effort, MVJ). kai, is there some reason this can't be moved out of the basketball forum?

    • Heck, if it weren't for this topic, the basketball forum would be pretty much dead.

The Butler game I was at had about 7k. That's pretty good considering it's JUCO football that a lot of people don't follow. No matter how good they've been, that's just the way it is. WSU football would draw more than that. Especially early on. And not to mention that the team Butler was playing was a team from Texas, a damn good one, that nobody knew. D1 football would be completely different.

      • I disagree that club is the right level, you are using unrelated info to form an opinion on how WSU football at D1 level would do with fans.

I do believe that full FBS D1 is a pipe dream and I don't know if FCS football in the Valley would be supported. However D1 FCS non scholarship wouldn't cost that much (since there is no need to offset scholarships) and it would still give WSU fans actual football. Then just see where that takes you.

To me that should be the goal of this club football, try getting enough interest to justify the athletic department looking into non scholarship football.

I'm sure if you ask DOFO nicely he would start "The Drought - Revenge of Miser Brothers" in the basketball forum.

Got to admire the young man for trying to do something even if it is unlikely to get off the ground.

WSU has been without a football program since 1986. The lack of a football team was a problem for Wills. The sophomore saw a lack of college life among his fellow students.

“I was looking at ways of solving that,” Wills said. “One is campus housing and the other is creating a football team.”

In Wills’ eyes, the creation of a football team would help to create unity among students. Football games would bring students together from all across Wichita to create a feeling of college life for a university that Wills sees as mainly a commuter school.
He makes a good point although I would point out that the student support for our very high quality volleyball team in the fall is pretty tepid also, so I'm not sure how many students are really looking very hard for something to bring them together in the fall.

Now student housing definitely needs to be upgraded.

A lot of people simply don't understand or get into volleyball. Football is a whole other animal.

Well Robinson sure comes across as a typical, uppity, highly-political state university administrative douchebag.

Stop tugging on the new President's junk and take an apolitical stance just once in your life, Mr. Robinson. It's CLUB football. Regardless of what the organizer ultimately wants, the compromise is CLUB football.

You are thumbing your nose at starting a CLUB football team because you don't want an NCAA football team? Seriously?

I'd expect more from a guy that played NAIA FOOTBALL in college.

As is Club Football. I won't be missing any Shocker Volleyball games to attend a Club Football game. Besides Joshua wasn't talking about a lot of people. He was talking specifically about the students getting behind something at Wichita State.

                          • By the way all this is starting to sound, with WSU officials coming out and stating they are not even interested in CLUB level football being played on the WSU campus, this is all about personal reasons, NOT money. I mean, walk around the WSU campus, I think it's safe to say these jokers can afford CLUB level football. It sounds more like Beggs just has some personal issue with football if he doesn't even want it being on CLUB level on the WSU campus.

Most students know next to nothing about volleyball. They're not going to get behind what they don't know. Had I not had friends in HS that played and had our teams sucked, I probably wouldn't give two craps about WSU volleyball. I'd guess there'd be more student attendance at CLUB football than NCAA Volleyball
