Hello Shocker faithful,
You may have noticed that ShockerNet was recently down for a day and a half to two days. The reason the server was down was because the site's hits combined with the powerful software we now use, was putting too much stress on their CPU. They were migrating us to a closer location server to see if that alleviated our demand. It did not. I went through a handful of things to optimize the software to no avail. We were still using nearly the same amount of CPU. Which btw is in the top 1% of their demand. ShockerNet during it's peak basketball times receives over 1.5 million hits in a 30 day range.
With all of that said, they told me that this site is far too demanding to be paying a shared server rate. Which currently is around $200 a year. After running diagnostics on the site and realizing that there is nothing we can do to turn down CPU usage, they have given me 3 days to either upgrade to a new server package that won't effect their other hosted sites with our demand, or discontinue using the host. Which would mean the site would go down until I find a new host.
The bottom line? Server costs are going to go from $200 a year to nearly $850 a year. ShockerNet has never charged a dime to register or read content and I promise you that it will never be that way. But I just wanted to let everyone know what is up with the site at the moment, and that when we switch servers again, the site may be down for a day or maybe just a couple hours. But I will let you all know when that happens.
Thanks,
Matt
