  • An increase in server costs for ShockerNet possible downtime

    Hello Shocker faithful,

You may have noticed that ShockerNet was recently down for a day and a half to two days. The reason the server was down was because the site's hits combined with the powerful software we now use, was putting too much stress on their CPU. They were migrating us to a closer location server to see if that alleviated our demand. It did not. I went through a handful of things to optimize the software to no avail. We were still using nearly the same amount of CPU. Which btw is in the top 1% of their demand. ShockerNet during it's peak basketball times receives over 1.5 million hits in a 30 day range.

With all of that said, they told me that this site is far too demanding to be paying a shared server rate. Which currently is around $200 a year. After running diagnostics on the site and realizing that there is nothing we can do to turn down CPU usage, they have given me 3 days to either upgrade to a new server package that won't effect their other hosted sites with our demand, or discontinue using the host. Which would mean the site would go down until I find a new host.

The bottom line? Server costs are going to go from $200 a year to nearly $850 a year. ShockerNet has never charged a dime to register or read content and I promise you that it will never be that way. But I just wanted to let everyone know what is up with the site at the moment, and that when we switch servers again, the site may be down for a day or maybe just a couple hours. But I will let you all know when that happens.

    Thanks,
    Matt

OK, I just donated $50. If 15 more people do this, then there should not be any problems.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

I made a donation as well. Curious, is Sports Time paying an annual fee for the banner at the top? I wonder if other types of non intrusive advertising like this can be used to fund Shockernet in the future, by local businesses.

So what you are saying is that you might advertise a Wally World banner on Shock Net?

Sports Time is an annual advertiser, and I have looked into possibly getting more ads from local businesses, but haven't reached out to anyone in particular.

My goal for ShockerNet is to not clutter up the site with too many ads. Doing something through AdSense doesn't bear much financial income and tends to make the site look cheap, imo. I've tried it on a few of my sites and just haven't had any success with them.

Quite a few people have sent in donations this morning to my surprise. I wasn't expecting many if any donations from this, it was just sort of a "state of the union" address for the site. I wanted to keep people updated on the site so if it happened to go down for any length of time, people had some warning. I really appreciate all the great Shockers and supporters who chipped in already. We have such a great fanbase.

$50 from me as well. Relatively cheap as addictions go.

As for my strange donate of $45.08...or whatever it was, that was the balance remaining in my Paypal account. :D

Got me off my lazy rear and finally donated. Being such a big part of my life, it is worth a lot more than $50.

Kai, maybe you can spring for a six month extension with your current provider. For payment, you could use recent donations.

It would give you ample time to assess your options for the future. Three days seems like a short string to me.

                          Just an idea.

Count me in as well, though not at the level of some others. I just got through paying for my other addition - season basketball tickets.

The outpouring of donations is... well I'm a little speechless at the moment. I was talking with DSB and told him I had no idea people would be so willing to chip in to help with this increased server costs. With all the donations added up just from yesterday, people gave a little over $600. Shocker Nation is amazing. Thank you all so much for helping out with this new server. These are the times that reinforce why we have such great support for our teams.
