On this date in 2023 Jean Spalding, a great friend of mine and a dedicated season ticket holder, passed away. Jean was 94. She had been a season ticket holder for over 50 years. I doubt any of you knew her. That was your loss.

She attended every home game this year. In the covid years she ignored any warnings and attended every home game where fans were allowed. She was obviously in a high risk group, but if she was going to die from covid, she was going to do it from having watched a Shocker game.

I am hosting a social event Saturday she would have attended. We will have a moment of silence for her passing and let everyone at the event know of her dedication and loyalty to Shocker basketball.

Today in Shockers Sports History: March 18th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    2 and 1

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2009 – Beat Buffalo in Wichita 84-73. College Basketball Invitational (CBI) -- campus sites. Toure’ Murry, a 2008 Klein Forest (Houston area) graduate, is already making an impact at the college level. Murry, a freshman guard for the Wichita State men’s basketball team, and teammate Clevin Hannah led the Shockers (17-16) in scoring with 11.1 points per game apiece. Murry scored 12 points and had four assists in Wichita State’s 84-73 victory over Buffalo Wednesday night in the College Basketball Invitational, a second-year tournament.

2006 – Won vs. (#18) Tennessee in Greensboro, North Carolina 80-73. NCAA First & Second Rounds (Greensboro, N.C.). WSU punched its first Sweet 16 ticket in a quarter-century with an upset of No. 2 seed and SEC East champion, Tennessee… Sweet 16 trips by WSU and Bradley helped further silence those who wondered why the mid-major MVC had gotten four tournament bids… P.J. Couisnard finished with 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-4 from deep… First round heroes Paul Miller and Sean Ogirri struggled, but Kyle Wilson helped pick up some of the slack with 17 points on three triples. Ryan Martin scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting and provided the final exclamation point on the victory with a steal and slam in the closing seconds… Chris Lofton -- who hit a last-second shot to beat Winthrop 63-61 in the first round -- and C.J. Watson each scored 20 points to lead the Volunteers… Tennessee led 63-58 on a pair of free throws from Watson with 5:42 left, but the Shockers rallied to tie it at 63 on a 3-pointer from Ogirri… After the teams traded baskets, Karon Bradley drained a jumper from just outside the lane for a 67-65 lead with 2:12 left. Couisnard followed with the step-back three for a 70-65 lead with 1:05 left… Tennessee twice cut the deficit to three points in the final seconds, but got no closer as WSU went 8-for-10 at the foul line in the final minute

    Other:
1996 - Randy Smithson, the former guard whose playing days brought WSU’s second-highest NCAA finish, was hired and given the reins of the WSU program.
