  • Today in Shockers Sports History: March 16th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    5 and 3

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2011 – Won vs. Nebraska in Wichita 76-49. National Invitational Tournament (campus sites). David Kyles scored 13 points and hit four of Wichita State's 11 3-pointers in a 76-49 victory over Nebraska on Wednesday night in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. J.T. Durley had 12 points and Graham Hatch added 11 for Wichita State (25-8), which will play at Virginia Tech in the second round. Wichita State went 6 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half to take a 40-20 lead at the break, only the third time a Nebraska opponent has scored at least 40 first-half points this season. Only Iowa State (41) and Kansas (42) scored more first-half points against the Huskers this season. "Offensively, we really passed the ball well, and we did it against a great defensive team," Marshall said. "We really passed the ball." Wichita State started the second half on a 7-2 run, capped by Joe Ragland's no-look pass to Gabe Blair for an easy lay-in. Less than a minute later, Ragland hit a 3-pointer to put the Shockers up 50-23. Nebraska was never closer than 21 after that.

2006 – Won vs. Seton Hall in Greensboro, N.C. 86-66. NCAA First Round (Greensboro, N.C.) Sean Ogirri had 23 points and hit six 3-pointers to lead Wichita State past Seton Hall from the vaunted Big East, 86-66... The win also provided the Missouri Valley Conference a quick bit of vindication after the league raised eyebrows with four bids, the same as the Atlantic Coast, Big 12 and Pac-10 conferences... MVC Player of the Year, Paul Miller scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half, opening the game with back-to-back field goals... Ogirri hit four treys in the first 16 minutes, and the Shockers led 40-20 at the 2:19-mark... It was Wichita State's first NCAA win since reaching a regional final in 1981, and its first tournament game in 18 years... The Pirates were the lowest-seeded team among a record eight NCAA bids for the Big East... Seton Hall tried to rally, pulling to 55-44 with about 12 minutes left. Ogirri's fifth 3 and a goaltended layup by Matt Braeuer pushed it back to 63-46 with 9:13 left. Ogirri's sixth-and-final triple turned into a four-point play after he was fouled on the release. He finished 6-of-10 from deep.

2005 – Won vs. Houston in Wichita 85-69. National Invitational Tournament. Jamar Howard scored 21 points and Kyle Wilson added 20 to lead Wichita State past Houston 85-69 in the opening round of the NIT on Wednesday night. The Shockers (21-9) finished the game on a 19-3 run to win for just the third time in nine games. Randy Burns had 16 points and Sean Ogirri chipped in 14 for Wichita State, which will play either Kent State or Western Kentucky. Houston took a 36-34 lead into halftime. The Cougars shot 53 percent (14-26) in the first half. The Shockers shot 52 percent (10-19) in the half. The Shockers opened the second half on a 10-3 run, capped by Burns' 3, to take a 44-39 lead. The teams traded baskets, with Wichita State taking a 52-51 lead with 13:15 remaining. Wilson scored the next seven points, including a three-point play, to give Wichita State a 59-51 lead with 11:34 to play. The Cougars responded, going on a 15-5 run to take a 66-64 lead with 6:10 to play. Owens was then assessed a technical foul for hitting the backboard after a dunk, and Wilson nailed the two free throws to tie the game at 66.

1989 – Won vs. UC Santa Barbara in Wichita 70-62. National Invitational Tournament

1927 – Won vs. Canton (Ill.) A.L. in Kansas City, Mo. 35-29. 2nd-round AAU National Tournament (Kansas City, Mo.)

Shocker fans have always traveled well. We had a 'parade' of cars following the bus to KC for this game and were so close to winning a National Championship.
