  • Today in Shockers Sports History: March 12th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    3 and 1

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2021 – (#RV) vs. South Florida in Fort Worth, Texas 68-67. (American Athletic Conference Tournament in Ft. Worth, Texas/Dickies Arena). Tyson Etienne scored 20 points and hit a pair of foul shots with 8.9 seconds left to lift top seed Wichita State to a 68-67 win over ninth seed South Florida in the American Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. Alterique Gilbert had 12 points and Morris Udeze grabbed 11 rebounds for the Shockers.

1965 – Won vs. SMU in Manhattan 86-81. NCAA Midwest Regional (Manhattan, Kan). Kelly Pete scored 31 points and prevented several more on the defensive end to help Wichita State survive SMU in Midwest Regional Semifinal action…The Shockers led by seven points with 1:20 to go but watched the Mustangs crawl to within a pair. A pro-Shocker crowd of 10,500 at K-State Ahearn Field House held its collective breath after Dave Leach missed a free throw with 14 seconds left, giving SMU a chance to tie. The Shocker pressured the ball in the back court, and Leach atoned for his earlier miss by deflecting a Mustang pass into the arms of a wide-open Pete for a game-clinching layup… Down 35-25 near the 5:30-mark of the first half, WSU outscored the Mustangs 18-6 the rest of the way to take a 43-41 lead into the locker room… Pete and the Shocker defense harassed SMU into 17 first-half turnovers, but the Shocker star was whistled for his fourth foul with 15:40 to play and WSU clinging to a 55-54 advantage. Leach joined him on the bench with four fouls at the 10:40-mark. Yet, with two of its top scorers sidelined, WSU actually gained ground. Behind the outside shooting of Jamie Thompson (18 points), WSU made 16-of-27 shots in the second half. By the time Pete and Leach had rejoined the lineup with 5:50 to play, the MVC champs had built a 73-64 cushion.

1928 – Won vs. Comar Oilers in Kansas City, Mo. 35-21. AAU National Tournament (Kansas City, Mo.)

I remember the ‘28 game like it was yesterday; ole Ross was hotter than a two-dollar pistol… establishing himself as one of the top players in the country…
