  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 28th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    13 and 20

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2019 – Beat UConn in Wichita 65-63. Samajae Haynes-Jones scored 20 points and hit a jumper at the buzzer as Wichita State erased a 10-point deficit and beat Connecticut 65-63 on Thursday night. UConn's Alterique Gilbert scored on back-to-back 3-pointers inside the final minute that tied the game at 63. Haynes-Jones took an inbounds pass with 6.4 seconds to go, dribbled the floor and sealed it with an off-balance shot from the corner. "I've shot that shot a lot in my life," Haynes-Jones said. "I was relaxed and knocked it down. I knew it was going in." Wichita State (14-13, 7-8 American Athletic Conference) rebounded from an 88-85 loss against Memphis on Saturday and has won two of its last three games. Coach Gregg Marshall also picked up his 300th career win with the Shockers. Haynes-Jones was 7 of 16 from the floor and made four 3-pointers. Asbjorn Midtgaard had four blocks in the second half to halt UConn's comeback and sent the Huskies (13-15, 4-11) home with their sixth straight loss. Markis McDuffie scored 13 of his 19 points for the Shockers in the second half. Jamarius Burton added 11 points.

2015 – (#11) WSU Beat (#10) Northern Iowa in Wichita, Kansas 74-60. Playing in front of a spirited crowd in one of the biggest home games in school history, Wichita State responded. Ron Baker scored 17 points and Fred VanVleet added 13 to help the 11th-ranked Shockers beat No. 10 Northern Iowa 74-60 on Saturday and win the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title for a second straight season. “Combined with ‘College GameDay’ being here, a top-10 opponent, playing for a championship, I’ve coached 17 years and this is the biggest regular-season home game I’ve ever had,” Shockers coach Gregg Marshall. “Our team responded. And our fans responded. It was electric.” The last time five Shockers scored in double figures was last season's conference tournament championship game. ... The Shockers have won 32 straight home games, fourth longest active streak nationally. ... Wichita State avoided a regular-season sweep.

2004 – Beat Illinois State in Wichita 68-62

1998 – Beat vs. Indiana State in St. Louis, Mo. 65-55, 1st round game in the MVC Tournament (St. Louis, Mo./ Kiel Center)

    1987 – Beat Creighton in Wichita 73-70. The Shockers had a 19-point deficit, 14-33 (5:48 1h).
