  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 25th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    18 and 15

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2017 – (#25) WSU Won at Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. 86-67. Landry Shamet scored a career-best 23 points as No. 25 Wichita State clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title for a fourth straight season with an 86-67 victory over Missouri State on Saturday. The title is the fifth in six seasons for the Shockers (27-4, 17-1), who have won 12 straight games and appear well on their way to a sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Shamet finished 9-of-12 shooting, 5 of 8 from 3-point range, while topping his previous best of 20 points -- set against South Dakota State in December. Shaq Morris added 20 points for Wichita State, which has won 14 straight games over the Bears (16-15, 7-11), while Conner Frankamp had 14 points.

2015 – (#11) WSU Won at Indiana State Terre Haute, Ind. 63-53. With Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker struggling on offense, Darius Carter picked up the offense for Wichita State. The 6-foot-7 forward posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 11 Shockers to a 63-53 win over Indiana State on Wednesday night. His scoring came on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and during key moments of the game when the Shockers needed a basket. "He wanted (the ball)," Wichita head coach Gregg Marshall said. "He had a good game against them last time and I think part of the reason he had such a good game is because of (Indiana State's) concentration on Baker and Fred (VanVleet). That opens up a little more room for him to drive in there in the post and get some layups. He really established himself tonight." Fred VanVleet added 15 points while Tekele Cotton scored 12 in a win that saw Wichita State score 30 points in the paint on the offensive end. The Shockers won their seventh straight game inside the Hulman Center, making it the second longest streak in school history against an opponent at its own arena. It was the 25th victory in the last 29 meetings against the Sycamores.

2014 – (#2) WSU Won at Bradley Peoria, Ill. 69-49. Wichita State is all alone in the record book. Again using a balanced offense and tenacious defense, the second-ranked Shockers became the first Division I team to reach 30-0 in the regular season with a 69-49 victory over Bradley on Tuesday night. "To be the first and only team in college basketball to win 30 without a loss in the regular season," Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said when asked about his theme for the game. "I realize we're playing more games ... but it has never happened in the regular season. "So it's a first. And these guys like to be the first, and the best." Ron Baker had 15 points to lead four Wichita State players in double figures as the Shockers became the 11th team to reach 30-0, the previous 10 all hitting the 30-win mark during postseason play. The last team to reach 30-0 was UNLV in 1990-91. The Runnin' Rebels went 34-0 that season before losing to Duke in the national semifinals. The Shockers (30-0, 17-0 Missouri Valley Conference) have one more regular-season game, at home Saturday against Missouri State. The last team to finish a regular season unbeaten was Saint Joseph's in 2003-04 at 27-0. The next season, Illinois got to 29-0 before losing its regular-season finale at Ohio State.

2012 – (#19) WSU Beat Drake in Wichita 81-58. Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall made his pitch to David Kyles, Garrett Stutz and Toure' Murry four years ago. On Saturday, that promise was delivered in a celebration of No. 19 Wichita State's first Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship since 2006 after an 81-58 victory over Drake. The Shockers (26-4, 16-2) had clinched the title earlier in the week. "It's a special group," Marshall said of his senior class. "They had no idea what things were going to be like here. It wasn't a dream, but just a sales pitch, 'This is what we can do at Wichita State.' "

2006 – Beat Illinois State in Wichita 64-57. The Shockers were in control most of the way, despite any pressure they may have felt from a sellout crowd anxiously awaiting the opportunity to celebrate the program’s first regular season MVC title in 23 years. Kyle Wilson scored 18 points and Sean Ogirri added 16 as Wichita State beat Illinois State 64-57 to win the Missouri Valley Conference championship.

1984 – Beat West Texas State in Wichita 61 – 60. Karl Papke made a short bank at 0:02 to help seal the victory.

1973 – Beat Ball State in Wichita in 108-76

1967 – Beat (#2) Louisville in Wichita 84-78. Louisville lost for only the third time in 26 games as Melvin Reed led the Shockers with 24 points. Louisville All-America center Wes Unseld had 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Cardinals, but five Shockers, led by Reed, scored in double-figures.

    1956 – Beat (#14) Houston in Wichita 82-72

1911 – Beat Wichita YMCA at Fairmount 31-30
