  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 21st

For the day, the Shockers are:
    17 and 6

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2018 – (#13) WSU Beat Tulane Wichita 93-86. After seeing his team cut a 16-point halftime deficit down to four with four minutes remaining, Tulane coach Mike Dunleavy hoped a trap would provide a turnover to make it a one-possession game. Wichita State senior guard Conner Frankamp did not allow that to happen. Frankamp scored six points in less than a minute to maintain the buffer the No. 13 Shockers needed to beat the Green Wave 93-86 on Wednesday night. Frankamp finished with 18 points, key in a game Wichita State (22-5, 12-3 American Athletic Conference) played without star guard Landry Shamet due to illness. "I thought Frankamp was off the chain, great, the difference in the game," Dunleavy said. "We probably let him split us five times in traps. ... He just shredded us and made plays." Shaquille Morris had 25 points and nine rebounds for the Shockers. Markis McDuffie scored 15 points, C.J. Keyser had 11, and Austin Reaves added 11. All those double-figure scorers did not make Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall happy after his team allowed Tulane (13-14, 4-11) -- tied for 10th in the conference -- to score 55 second-half points on 61.8-percent shooting. "We can't get stops," Marshall said. "Keeping people in front, contesting shots, it was a struggle. If we don't start defending better, we're fool's gold."

2017 – (#25) WSU Beat Evansville in Wichita 109-83. The impressive depth of No. 25 Wichita State has never been more evident than Tuesday night, when little-used seniors John Robert Simon and Zach Bush checked into their final home game. The Shockers were already on their way to a 109-83 blitz of Evansville, their 11th consecutive win and one that moves them to the brink of another Missouri Valley title. But the largest cheers were reserved for when Simon and Bush began pouring in shots in the closing minutes. Simon hit three 3-pointers. Bush added his third basket of the season. "Big night for our seniors, who have meant so much to us," Shockers coach Gregg Marshall said. "They know the system and they executed it beautifully. They just went in and played with a flair." Still, it was the usual bunch that led the Shockers (26-4, 16-1) to another easy win. Shaq Morris had 18 points, five assists and five boards. Connor Frankamp, Markis McDuffie and Rashard Kelly had 13 points apiece. Landry Shamet scored 12 on 4-for-4 shooting. And surging big man Darral Willis Jr. finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks. The Shockers played 16 players, nine of them at least 10 minutes. All but two scored.

2016 – (#RV) WSU Won at Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. 84-51. Ron Baker scored 14 points and Wichita State rolled over Indiana State 84-51 on Sunday. Baker had five rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Shaquille Morris, Zach Brown and Markis McDuffie all finished with 11 points for the Shockers (21-7, 14-2 Missouri Valley), who have won four of five and clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The game was tied at seven after 4 1/2 minutes, but Wichita State took over from there. A 15-4 run made it 22-11 and the Shockers led 44-26 at the break. Wichita State opened the second half with a 10-2 run and the rout was on.

2009 – Beat Cleveland State in Wichita 70-59. Toure Murry connected on five second-half three-pointers and led Wichita State with 17 points to lift the Shockers to a 70-59 victory over Cleveland State Saturday. Wichita State (14-14) never trailed after the 13:49 mark in the first half in the ESPNU BracketBusters game. WSU has now won seven-straight at home and eight of its last 11. Cleveland State (20-9) had three in double-digits with J?Nathan Bullock and D?Aundray Brown each scoring 12 points. Cedric Jackson added 10. Wichita State built a 12-point first half lead by making 12 of its first 18 shots. The Shockers shot 62.5 percent for the half. But Cleveland State rallied to close the deficit to within four at the half. The Vikings drew within three points multiple times in the second half, but could never take the lead. Murry?s fifth three-pointer of the half started a 9-0 run to put the game away.

2004 – Beat Austin Peay in Wichita 62-47. Fridge Holman scored 16 points and Jamar Howard had 15 as Wichita State beat Austin Peay 62-47 Saturday to snap the Governors' 14-game winning streak. Wichita State (18-8), which led 32-24 at halftime, led 48-41 with 7:48 left and then went on a 14-4 run. Howard scored seven in that rally, including a dunk that put Wichita State ahead 52-41, and then hit 5-of-6 free throws. Holman closed out that run with two more free throws. Paul Miller finished with 12 points for Wichita State. The game was part of ESPN's "Bracket Buster," an event that highlights mid-major programs.
