  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 18th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    19 and 23

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2021 – (#RV) WSU Beat (#6) Houston in Wichita 68-63. Dexter Dennis took cover among a group of Houston players on an inbounds play in the final seconds and broke from the pack for a crucial steal that helped Wichita State surprise the sixth-ranked Cougars and take over the top spot in the American Athletic Conference. Tyson Etienne and Alterique Gilbert each scored 16 points and Dennis added 12, leading Wichita State to a 68-63 victory on Thursday night. The Shockers (13-4, 9-2) moved past Houston (17-3, 11-3) and into first place in the conference standings. The timely steal by Dennis led to an unlikely victory for Wichita State. “I was kind of hiding a little bit, hiding behind someone,” Dennis said. “I knew he didn’t see me. And as soon as the ball left his hand, I broke.” Dennis intercepted the ball near midcourt, burst toward his basket and drew an intentional foul call that helped seal the win.

2018 – (#19) WSU Won at (#5) Cincinnati in Highland Heights, Ky. 76-72. Dave Stallworth was running the show the last time Wichita State beat a Top 5 team on the road. Landry Shamet took the lead as the Shockers did it again 54 years later. This one, too, will be a reference point, given all that was at stake. Shamet scored 19 points, and No. 19 Wichita State ended the nation's longest home-court winning streak, beating No. 5 Cincinnati 76-72 on Sunday to leave the American Athletic Conference race wide open. The Shockers (21-5, 11-3) beat a Top 5 team on the road for the first time since 1964. They led most of the way, building an 11-point lead midway through the second half and holding on. Shaquille Morris' dunk with 5 seconds left finished it off. The Shockers ran onto the floor for congratulatory chest bumps. Coach Gregg Marshall got a celebratory dunking in the locker room, leaving his light-colored shirt clinging to him. "It's tremendous," Marshall said. "Look at my shirt. College basketball has such tremendous parity. The games are decided by great players making great plays. Landry is a tremendous player." The Bearcats (23-4, 12-2) had won their last 39 home games. In their first real home challenge of the season, they wound up playing catch-up and coming up short.

2017 – (#RV) WSU Beat Northern Iowa in Wichita 73-44. Landry Shamet and Darral Willis Jr. scored 14 points apiece and Wichita State throttled Northern Iowa 77-43 on Saturday to run its winning streak to 10. Markis McDuffie added 12 points for the Shockers (25-5, 15-1 Missouri Valley), who reached 25 wins for the eighth year in a row. Shamet hit four 3-pointers and Wills grabbed 11 rebounds to help Wichita State dominate the boards 48-23. Wichita State, which has had 10-game winning streaks 10 times dating back to the 1920-21 season, took control early with a 9-0 run. The Shockers led 38-26 at the half and, after the Panthers scored the first six points of the second half, a 14-2 run broke it open. Only twice all game did Northern Iowa make baskets on consecutive possessions.

2016 - (#RV) WSU Beat Missouri State in Wichita 99-68, Zach Brown scored 16 points and Wichita State routed Missouri State, 99-68 on Thursday night to push its lead in the Missouri Valley Conference to two games over Illinois State. The Shockers raced to a 51-27 lead at intermission and went 10 players deep into their bench before the dust settled. A dozen players figured in the scoring for Wichita State. The Bears tied the game at 8-8 on Obediah Church's jumper four minutes into the contest, Wichita State kicked into another gear, taking a 10-point lead with nine minutes left in the half and doubling the advantage with five minutes left. Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker each had 15 points for Wichita State (20-7, 13-2). The Shockers were 39 of 66 from the field (59.1 percent) and collected 13 steals.

2012 – (#24) WSU Won at Davidson in Davidson, N.C. 91-74. Joe Ragland wasn't perfect. The Wichita State guard, however, was pretty close. Ragland turned in one of the best games of his college career Saturday, scoring 30 points on 11 of 14 shooting and Wichita State (No. 24 AP) shot 80 percent in the second half to break open a tight game and beat Davidson 91-74. Ragland hit all but one of his four 3-point attempts and made all five free throws. The senior finished one point shy of his career high set earlier this season against UNLV. It was Marshall's 300th career victory as a coach. He won 194 of those about 35 miles down the road at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., so the victory was extra special. But Marshall didn't want to talk about that milestone, instead wanting to focus on what the win meant for his team. Wichita State came into the game ranked in the AP top 25 this week for the first time since 2006.
