  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 11th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    19 and 9

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2015 – (#15) WSU Beat Indiana State in Wichita 74-57. Fred VanVleet looks so nonchalant on the court that nobody could be faulted for giving him a good shake -- you know, just to make sure the talented point guard is still awake. Then you realize he just put up a triple-double. Or poured in a bunch of points. Wichita State's floor leader followed up his rare statistical achievement from last weekend with a big scoring outburst Wednesday night, scoring 21 points and leading the No. 15 Shockers to a 74-57 victory over Indiana State. "Fred may look like he's casual," Sycamores coach Greg Lansing said, "but he has complete control at all times. He doesn't have any weaknesses." VanVleet also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals Wednesday night. "Fred is amazing," said Darius Carter, who added 17 points for the Shockers. "I love playing with him. He's a great point guard. I love that he's like a coach on the floor, and I can come ask him anything for any position and he knows everything." Tekele Cotton also had 16 points as Wichita State (22-3, 12-1 Missouri Valley) beat Indiana State (12-13, 8-5) for the fifth straight time. The Shockers have won 30 straight at home, the fourth-best active streak in the nation. VanVleet had the first triple-double by a Shockers player since 1972 in Saturday night's victory over Missouri State, putting up 10 points, 10 boards and 11 assists. But the preseason All-American may have been even more dynamic against the Sycamores, scoring 14 points in the first half and then hitting a key basket whenever things got tight over the final 20 minutes.

2014 – (#4) WSU Beat Southern Illinois in Wichita 78-67. Wichita State funneled into the locker room for some sage advice from coach Gregg Marshall, and wound up getting a little wisdom from Emmy Award-winner Kirstie Alley instead. "She said to the guys, `Don't read the reviews, the positive ones and the negative ones. Just play the game," Marshall said after a 78-67 victory over Southern Illinois that ran the No. 4 Shockers' record to 26-0. "So you're getting it from a Hollywood star." Behind 19 points from Ron Baker and 18 from Cleanthony Early, the Shockers (13-0 Missouri Valley Conference) still managed to put Southern Illinois away, becoming the first team since Memphis in 2008 to start 26-0. All that stands in the way of becoming the first team since Saint Joseph's in 2004 to have a perfect regular season are five more games. Salukis coach Barry Hinson said the crowd, raucous throughout, was a big factor. "There's a reason they're 26-0. They're damn good!" Hinson said. "But they made shots, and that crowd just went nuts, and we came down and said, `Hey, it's close to April 15. We'll just give you the ball and we'll get a tax deduction!"

2012 – Won at (#17) Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska 89-68. The Missouri Valley Conference isn't just Creighton and everybody else. Wichita State made that abundantly clear Saturday. Joe Ragland scored 24 points, Ben Smith matched his career high with 22 and the Shockers moved a step closer to the Valley's regular-season championship with an 89-68 victory over Creighton (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP). "Maybe we'll get some press now," Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said. "We've gotten some but we haven't gotten nearly the amount of it that the Creighton team has. The way they played early in the year they deserved it. But maybe these guys will get some. I haven't been around a group more mentally tough. It takes physical and mental toughness to do what they do on the road. It was exemplified today, times 100." Wichita State (22-4, 13-2) has won 12 of its last 13 games and 20 of 22, while the slumping Bluejays (21-5, 11-4) have lost three-straight. The Shockers took the record "Whiteout" crowd of 18,735 out of the game by the middle of the second half. The building began emptying in the last eight minutes. After the final buzzer, several Wichita State players walked off the court waving bye-bye to the fans that remained until the end.

2007 – Beat Illinois State in Wichita 69-64. P.J. Couisnard scored 17 points, and Wichita State held off Illinois State to win 69-64 on Sunday. The Shockers (17-9, 8-7 Missouri Valley Conference) did not trail after the break, but Illinois State (12-14, 4-11), cut the lead to one twice in the second half. Osiris Eldridge's basket with 1:32 to play got the Redbirds within 65-64, and they had a chance to take the lead after a turnover by Wichita State. But Illinois state didn't score again. The Shockers' Karon Bradley stole the ball from Anthony Slack with 43 seconds to go, and Wichita State sealed its victory with four free throws in the final 13 seconds. The Shockers outscored Illinois State 24-4 on free throws and converted on their final 13 attempts. Couisnard was 9-for-11 from the line.

2006 – Won at Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. 77-58

    1989 – Beat Xavier in Wichita 97-79

1982 – Won at Creighton in Omaha, Neb. 62-50

    1963 – (#9) WSU Beat Drake in Wichita 73-49

1961 – Won at Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. 87-70

    1952 – Beat Houston Wichita 70-49

1921 – Beat Friends in Wichita (Fairmount) 35-10

          Thank You!

Great to see excellent Shocker basketball, particularly against Creighton at Omaha. That was a real fun watch.

That's how the game is played! Dare I say that should be required watching by current WSU coaching staff and players!

I and several other Shocker-netters were there in person. It was a serious beatdown.

WSU shot 58% from the field and 50% from 3-point.

We went out to some Omaha's Old Town watering hole, and several "Creighton" fans who were really Nebraska fans were talking about Nebraska poaching GM. It was a LOL moment.

WSR, if you could make a GIF/clip of Wookie ripping into SoW at the 1:04 mark of first half (either live or replay), I’d offer up a blessing to you and your firstborn.

I was present in the Quest Center as it was called then. A blistering ass kicking engineered by the Greatest Coach we have ever had.

That is as big a Valley road win since maybe the Shocks beat Tulsa in Tulsa for the Valley Tournament crown in 87. At least as I can recall.

Gregg the following Monday: “Not only did we absolutely dominate Creighton, but we put internal strife into the McDermott household. I’m sure Momma didn’t appreciate Dad ripping her son like that in public.”
