  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 7th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    13 and 17

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2021 – Beat Temple in Wichita 70-67. Tyson Etienne Scored 20 points and converted a go-ahead three-point play with 42 seconds remaining to lead Wichita State to a 70-67 win over Temple on Sunday. Clarence then drew an offensive foul, forcing the Owls to foul Alterique Gilbert, who made two free throws with 25 seconds left for a 68-64 lead. Da mian Dunn responded with a three-point play with 17.7 seconds to go to again make it a one-point game but after Etienne made two more free throws at 16.8, the Owls couldn't connect on the tying basket. Trey Wade had 12 points for Wichita State (11-4, 7-2 American Athletic Conference). Morris Udeze added 11 points and seven rebounds. Dexter Dennis had 10 points. There were 20 lead changes and 15 ties in the game and the difference in score never reached double figures.

2015 – (#16) WSU Beat Missouri State in Wichita 78-35. Wichita State guards Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker have had a good chemistry for some time. So when Baker says he could see something different in VanVleet's eyes Saturday night, it's probably true. "Fred just had this look in his eye like, `Shoot it,' when he passed it to you," Baker said. "He's setting us up with these perfect passes, this perfect backspin, and you could tell he wanted you to make the shot." It was part of the reason VanVleet had the Shockers' first triple-double in 43 years as No. 16 Wichita State routed Missouri State 78-35. VanVleet finished with 10 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Shockers (21-3, 11-1 Missouri Valley Conference). He completed the feat in just 24 minutes of playing time and knew he was close early in the second half. "While still playing the game the right way, my guys helped me get over the hump," he said. "It's pretty special."

1998 – Beat Missouri State in Wichita 65-55

1985 – Beat Southern Illinois in Wichita 80-56

    1981 – (#19) WSU Beat Drake in Wichita 79-67

1976 – Won at Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. 70-61

1959 – Beat Memphis in Wichita 95-92 (OT)

1952 – Won at Creighton in Omaha, Neb. 63-62

    1946 – Beat Washburn in Wichita 46-28

1927 – Beat Pittsburg State in Wichita 27-25

The '27 game definitely wasn't a masterpiece by today's standards. A mysterious illness had spread across campus causing explosive diarrhea and vomiting (Yipes Stripes Beechnut Gum!). Ross and I were lucky and never caught it. Before the game, coach Gene Johnson told us to 'throttle it back' and not expend too much energy against Pitt... we didn't want to leave the custodians with a mess, so we basically 'loafed' 90% of the game and only played with four (4) guys. Pitt had their own issues with key injuries including their All-American point guard. Down 20-25 with about two minutes remaining, the "diaper dandy", phenom, do it all, First Team All-American, Ross McBurney literally took over, scoring the final 7 points and we eked out a victory... Ross did it all with the help of a couple of 'dimes' from yours truly.
