  • Today in Shockers Sports History: January 18th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    17 and 13

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2014 – (#5) WSU beat Indiana State in Wichita 68-48. Midway through the second half Wichita State guard Ron Baker senses the expected battle for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference was not going to happen. As the fifth-ranked Shockers kept adding to their lead and Indiana State appeared to become more frustrated, the eventual 68-48 blowout seemed inevitable. "When we held them to like four points in the first eight minutes after halftime, I could tell we were putting salt in their wound," Baker said. "It was pretty smooth sailing from there." Indeed, the undefeated Shockers (19-0, 6-0 MVC) cruised behind Baker's 16 points and 15 from Fred VanVleet. Darius Carter and Chadrack Lufile each scored 10 points inside as Wichita State extended school records for winning streak and best start to a season. At 19-0, Wichita State tied the 1962-63 Cincinnati team for second-best start for a Missouri Valley team. Both trail Indiana State in 1978-79, which did not lose until the national championship game.

2012 – Won at Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa 71-68. Toure' Murry scored 24 points, including a layup with 1:21 to play that gave Wichita State the lead for good, in a back-and-forth victory Wednesday over Northern Iowa. Murry added a jumper with 12 seconds left for the final margin. Northern Iowa's Marc Sonnen's game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark. Garrett Stutz added 17 points and Joe Ragland 13 for the Shockers (16-3, 7-1 Missouri Valley).

2003 – Won at Illinois State in Normal, Ill. 69-66

    1999 – Beat Missouri State in Wichita 94-88 (2OT)

1997 – Beat Missouri State in Wichita 75-60

1964 – Won at North Texas in Denton, Texas 86-70

1958 – (#17) WSU won at Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. 74-63

1941 – Beat Friends in Wichita (Henrion) 47-29

1928 – Won at Pittsburg State in Pittsburg 31-27

1911 – Won at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina 43-42

1928 Pitt game. Pitt was ranked #13 and we were holding steady at #2 with a chance to take over the top spot from the 'Phoggers' in Lawrence. The Pitt team was loaded with a troop of rough Silverbacks and they were an intimidating bunch. We held a ten-point lead at the half, but King (troop leader) and the Silverbacks came back strong to tie the game with about a minute remaining. From there, Ross took over and scored consecutive baskets to secure the hard earned four-point road victory. Ole Ross and 'yours truly' sent the Silverbacks back to the lowlands.
