  • Today in Shockers Sports History: January 9th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    21 and 13

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2020 – (#23) WSU beat (#21) Memphis in Wichita 76-67. Wichita State started each half strong only to see Memphis counter and stay in the game. The Shockers burst out to a 23-11 lead before Memphis fought back, holding Wichita State to only two points over nearly five minutes, cutting the lead to 25-22 with 4:48 remaining in the half. “We finally got stops,” Hardaway said. “We put them in position when the shot clock was going down, got the rebound and got going downhill.” “We had the ball twice down six in the final minutes and turned it over,” Hardaway said. “You can’t do that on the road.” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was not thrilled with all aspects of his team’s play, but he said he loved the fight in a game where neither team shot it well. “The win is a credit to our guys that went out and scrapped and fought,” Marshall said, “sometimes against dudes are much bigger and more athletic.”

2016 – (#RV) WSU won at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. 83-58. Ron Baker scored 18 points to lead Wichita State to an 83-58 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday. Conner Frankamp added 14 points and Markis McDuffie had 10 for Wichita State (10-5, 4-0 Missouri Valley), which hit 12 of 24 from long range and never trailed. Fred VanVleet had 12 rebounds, pushing him to 407 career boards, and became just the second player in the MVC to reach 1,000 points, 500 assists and 400 rebounds.

2013 – (#23) WSU beat Southern Illinois in Wichita 82-76. Cleanthony Early had a hard time wrapping his head around what he accomplished Wednesday night. Early scored 39 points -- the most for a Wichita State player in over 27 years -- and the No. 23 Shockers beat Southern Illinois 82-76 two days after returning to the national rankings. Early's point total was the highest for the Shockers since All-America and future NBA star Xavier McDaniel scored 44 in 1985. "No, no, not really," Early said when asked if he realized how close he came to McDaniel. "I respect him, though, respect him for doing that. I know he was the man." In addition WSU Big Man, Ehimen Orukpe, had 9-blocks in the game.

2010 – Beat Creighton in Wichita 70-58. Graham Hatch scored 17 points and reserve Gabe Blair added a season-high 15 to lead Wichita State to a 70-58 victory over Creighton on Saturday. Wichita State (15-2, 4-1 Missouri Valley) led by at least 10 points the entire second half. Wichita State started the game with an 11-1 run, capped by 3-pointers from Hatch and Clevin Hannah. The Shockers led 40-28 at halftime.

1983 – Won at Creighton in Omaha, Neb. 77-66

1978 – Beat New Mexico State in Wichita 71-70

1975 - Won at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa 106-92

1965 - (#5) WSU won at Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio 65-61

    1957 – Beat (#17) Saint Louis in Wichita 69-64

1953 – Won at Creighton in Omaha, Neb. 77-55

1930 – Won at Oklahoma City in Okla. City, Okla. 39-29

1923 – Won at Phillips in Enid, Oklahoma 24-19

The January 9, 1930 game was a blow out in OKC. Ross had completed his eligibility in ‘29 and ole WStateU was team captain. We were solid, but had lost the heart and soul of our team and had struggled in the fall on the road. You don’t automatically replace a FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN. Duh!

That game went down in history as the first ‘known’ unclothed event (we call it streaking today). With about three minutes remaining and the game well in hand, we were up 15 and hitting on all cylinders, when OKC called a desperation timeout. Out of nowhere, an OKC ‘Younker’ came down from the cheap seats; he had taken off all his clothes (yikes!) and proceeded to run up and down the court while coaches, refs and security tried to corral him.

The crowd was in ‘shock’, but you could hear one OKC fan yell, “don’t look Ethel!”, but it was way too late, she’d already got a free-shot… yep, that’s where it all started and now you know the rest of the story…
