We saw what what happened when the bench is too deep. We will see if Marshall can find a way to make this Miami-esque team happy.

For perspective, last year with 13 players, representing 1287 potential combinations, 3G actually tried 168 of them, or13.05%.

If there are 3 centers, 6 forwards and 6 guards on the roster and a combination must include one center, two forwards and 2 guards, there are 675 combinations.

How many of those can play more than one position? Of the 3 centers (which I assume are Orukpe, Hall, Lufile), both Hall and Lufile can play PF. Which of the guards can play SF?

Good questions. Will await your answer.

Essentially, if any player plays multiple positions, obviously the combinations increase but the calculation must take into account the same player cannot be on the floor in two positions at the same time. I'll leave that to the Newer=math" generation.

Our SN buddy ColdBlooded asks "how loaded are we?" We have 2 local players, a talented Ron Baker who was a steal from the great State of Kansas, an Overseas player that we have made more posts on in SN history, solid returuning players along with Carl "I will beast you out over every rebound in sight" Hall, some very exciting new High School players along with FVV who is a top 100 recruit, a College transfer named Armstead that is for real on both sides of the court,, and our best group of Juco transfers here maybe ever!!! How loaded are we? We may shine like Fort Knox all lit up on a clear night in the Milky Way.

Adding them up — Marshall is finished recruiting for next season. That doesn’t mean the roster is set.

With six returners, seven recruits and scholarships for Ron Baker and Malcolm Armstead (both walk-ons in 2011-12), WSU is at 15 scholarships. That is two more than the 13 allowed.

Marshall said the scholarship situation will become clear soon, perhaps by the end of the school year.

“We’ve got a couple things pending,” he said. “We certainly haven’t resolved anything.”
Sounds like we may know a little something in the next couple of weeks. That leads me to believe it has more to do with current roster players than incoming. Unless it involved Hawkins not getting the grades needed. I'd think Uwadiae would be a ? until closer to the start of the school year. Clearinghouse seems to usually make their decisions then. Maybe he shows up and plays over the summer, doesn't clear, and then preps a year at Sunrise or Word of Life.

                      Possible players by position

                      Center: Orukpe, Hall, White, Lufile
PF: Hall, White, Early, Lufile, Green
                      SF: Early, Wiggins, Wessel, Green
SG: Williams, Wiggins, Baker, Cotton, Wessel, Mitchell
PG: Armstead, Williams, VanVleet, Cotton, Mitchell

I left Hawkins and Uwadiae off the list to see how it looks with only 13 scholarship players.

I'd at least add Baker to SF and not sure I'd list White as a possible C. Outside of that I'd agree with where everyone is capable of playing. Personally though, I wouldn't add Mitchell into the numbers. I don't see him any more likely to see minutes than Randal V is and he's not going to be on 'ship. And you stated scholarship players in your post.

Must be one of those days, Sub. We're usually on the same wave length. White played a little, (very little), center last year and, if not for Lufile, might have played more this year. He knows the position and can handle it, so depending on EO and Lufile's progress, we'll see if he plays there at all. It would take a special front line like maybe White, Early, and Wiggins.

If you add Baker to SF, and he plays there, that will just about eliminate Evan's minutes.

I don't expect Evan to play much at all this year. Baker is the type of athlete that could play either wing spot, and maybe even some point in a pinch. I'd feel better about Baker at the point than White at the center.

As far as White goes, he'd be the 4th option on that list and only in case of emergency. He only played it this year when we had foul trouble with Garrett, Ehimen and Carl I believe. Not what anybody wanted to see. If we're stuck with White at the 5, we're in trouble. That would force Early to PF or more minutes there for a Hawkins/Green and start stretching us a bit. Hopefully, White doesn't see a single minute as a center this coming season.

Overall though, depth is great but playing time is going to be an issue. If everyone shows up and stays and it all works out somehow, I could see three or four redshirts benefitting players and the team.

                            PG - Williams 12, Armstead 15, Cotton 5, FVV 8
                            SG - Wiggins 14, Williams 12, Cotton 8, Baker 6
                            SF - Early 25, Wiggins 10, Baker 5
                            PF - White 20, Hall 12, Lufile 8
                            C - Ehimen 20, Hall 12, Lufile 8

                            Early 25
                            Williams 24
                            Wiggins 24
                            Hall 24
                            White 20
                            Ehimen 20
                            Lufile 16
                            Armstead 15
                            Cotton 13
                            Baker 11
                            FVV 8

Or something like that. That's nothing but mop up minutes at best for Wessel, Green and Hawkins. I'd expect Uwadiae the redshirt anyway. And that's playing 11. That's a lot of players to play significant minutes. And I know a number are going to be unhappy with me having FVV under 10. These are rough guesstimates and did what I could to get FVV up to 8.

Even though Mitchell is technically a walk on, I think he could at least be a "minute-eater" in the roation. The likely 6th option at SG and 5th option at PG is JuCo AA.

If you add Baker to SF, and he plays there, that will just about eliminate Evan's minutes.
I don't see many minutes for Evan next year - or the year after that. If Evan sees the same thing, that could be factor in fixing the scholarship situation.

But, then, it's spring and we're just flapping our gums and pounding our keyboards. What's really going to happen will be determined between September and November behind closed doors. Then we won't figure it all out untill probably January.

A mop up minute eater maybe. There aren't going to be many minutes left at PG after Williams, Armstead, Cotton and FVV get done. And if there are, I could see Baker getting those.

And at SG he'd have to wait for Williams, Wiggins, Baker, Cotton and probably Wessel and maybe Green if he doesn't RS.
