Marshall to Il St.?
Jankovich is just making a short term sacrifice to work with his mentor. With the IL recruiter, he's banking that he'll have a higher profile program in a year or two with those guys working together than he'd have on his own. Its nothing to do with MVC.
Unless SMU is also making a play for a better conference. It could mean the Valley has no plans
( much to the surprise of all of us).
I feel sorry for the ISUr fans. The next thing that they'll learn is that their star recruits Anthony Beane and Aaron Simpson want their release from their LOI and then Nic Moore will probably want to transfer. It's not a good day to be a Red Bird.
They should get Porter Moser back, but unfortunately I think they'll come after Chris Jans.
As I said on the other thread, why would you fire a head coach because the program is in such bad shape and then hire his assistant? That wouldn't fly too many places.
My understanding is none of this is a done deal, Brown to SMU and Jank as coach in waiting. Correct? I think Buzz Peterson is also being talked about as the coach in waiting if Brown goes to SMU.
Jank will get somewhere around $1.1 million to be CIW at SMU, about 2 to 3 times what he makes at ISUr. SMU will be joining the Big East in the next year or two so he gets a BCS job in next few years.
Isn't SMU aiming at a spot in a power conference? It's obviously not a great job, certainly at this point -- but is Illinois State?
SMU is already on their way to the Big East.
Bringing back Larry Brown instantly gives SMU's team credibility. I don't think being the CIW behind a legend at a team going to the Big East says anything terrible about the Valley. As long as he has that CIW thing in writing.
Surprised to hear it, though. Guess that goes to show you what a lot of us have been saying about the other Valley teams ... if you're not paying your coach what he's worth, he's gone on the first train out of town. If you're not paying at least a million, you can't compete in the coaching market.
It seems like a good move to me. I'm not sure what Jank is making now, but by all accounts this contract with SMU is a massive payraise, even at $1.1M. SMU is willing to spend more on one assistant coach than IllState is willing to spend on it's entire basketball program ... which school do you have more faith in to commit to winning? Meanwhile he goes off and works for a legend, with massive recruiting name recognition, isn't responsible for turning the program around, and in a few years gets a guaranteed bump up to head coach for a team built by Brown and now in the Big East, with I'm sure even more cash? With what IllState seems to be paying him, and having Brown as a mentor, he'd bail on them after this year anyway. If he was willing to interview for Tulsa, this seems like a no-brainer.
The real question would be if he tries to take IllState players/recruits with him.
