Great interview. Perhaps my favorite part was when he was asked if 3G promised him playing time or a starting role or something to that effect. His response was that if they had he probably would not have gone there.

At the same time though he expressed confidence that he was good enough to start without being cocky or arrogant. The nice thing though is that he expects to have to earn his playing time. He won't be coming in expecting any special favors.

I don't think this is a player that red-shirts or plays 7-10 minutes a game.

He's the type of guy who comes in and can change the mental culture of a team, without a coach having to discipline guys. He's been a leader on every team he's played on, and I see no reason why he doesn't become a leader on this team, and even during his Freshman year. I hope his hardwork is contagious and all these new guys coming in feed off of it. Because that paired with the already strong work ethic of the current team and the coaches and staff, there could be some very special things happening in the next 4 years.

With DWill a senior with 3 years under the Marshall system and Armstead a senior with D-I experience and 1 year (as a RS) under Marshall, they will have a big jump on FVV. That's not to say that near the end of next season FVV might not be getting 15-20 minutes, but he is a freshman coming in against 2 upperclassmen and a sophmore. Even with his basketball IQ, there will be a learning curve.

For some odd reason, I can't get this link to play on my handy dany computer. The night I listened to FVV's game on here, they were behind in the 2nd half versus the team with 2-6'8" players. FVV took that game over and found a way to win this game. That was fun to listen to, knowing that soon he will be a key player here.

FVV is a coach's dream player. When your best player's are your hardest working it sets the tone for the team. No disrespect to the PG's that are returning, but your getting IMO a top 5 PG who is at least equal to anything that you have on your team right now. I think by the end of the season Fred will be playing major min's and probably starting. They will be forced to play him, because he will make everybody so much better...

the most exciting part to me is how this team will look defensively. Armstead set the Oregon single season steals record (89 in '10-'11 season), FVV is a great defender, DWill was great last year, Cotton got a steal in nearly every game with limited minutes, Baker really gets after it on D (coaches say), and EO defending the rim. I haven't even mentioned any of the new guys who have some serious length. I hope we run and press the entire game. We definitely have the athleticism and depth.

I have said this on other threads, starting is fine, but it doesn't necessarily define the starter is better than who comes off the bench. FVV may come off the bench all year and play more minutes than the actual starter, who ever that might be. It's not who starts, but who finishes and plays during crunch time. I could care less who that is. That's why 3G gets paid the big bucks.

The announcers compared him to Derek Rose... Yipes, Stripes, Beechnut Gum!

He picked the Shockers because they are a notch above most mid-major level programs.
The people there are really basketball fans! :good:

He loves coach Marshall and is confident he will get some minutes next year. He hopes he starts and will work to do so, but understands there is other talent in the guard position. :good:

Fred, "I have to put the work in and compete with the others to get playing time." :good:

Announcer: "Wichita is becoming a perennial tournament team, will coach Marshall leave?" Fred, "Coach Marshall says he loves where he's at and he's confident that he will be there when I'm there." :good:

Fred, "The Shockers are bringing in a great recruiting class and I'm already in contact with my teammates." :good:

Announcer: "What kind of a point guard are you?" Fred, "A leader first...I want to set my teammates up. I will do what I have to do. Passing one night, scoring the next, I'll let my instincts take over." :good:

Announcer: "What is your goal?" Fred, "As a competitor, the NBA is a goal and a dream. I want to get my degree, and maybe play overseas ball if needed." Oh, and many of you will like this little nugget, "Another goal of mine is to win a NCAA championship!" :good:

Announcer: "Did Illinois recruit you?" Fred, "My freshman year, they brought me in with some other recruits. I was not their #1 priority; I will never be a #2 priority." :good:

Announcer: "WSU was a perfect fit with you?" Fred, "Yes, they've shown a lot of interest in me from the very start." :good:

Announcer: "What do you like?" Fred, "I like lots of music, I like the Bulls."

Announcer: "Do you try to mimic Derek Rose?" Fred, "I used to more than I do now, he's now much more of a scorer, I try to take Kobe Bryant and adapt it to me."

Not verbatim, but the best and quickest cliff notes I could provide. :)

Our Shockers could be better than advertised if we get our "defensive freak" on. I too hope we press, and once the opponents cross half court do some traps and mix up our D with some various unexpected zones. I think our offense will be there because we have plenty of folk that can score the ball. I look for Early to be a catalyst on both sides of the court, even if he is new. Last summer, Baker and Armstead really caught my eye and impressed me, even more than Cotton who was also good. Here is a possible starting lineup for starters 1. Armstead (later maybe FVV) 2. D-Will-(Baker will challenge him 3. Wiggons (Hawkins will challenge) 4. Early (White will come in here), 5. Hall --if he gets well and EO will get a fair shake, especially if he improves his scoring ability. Do we have another big incoming too? Dunno but stay tuned.

Thanks very much for this explaination. What a positive new leader joining our ranks. Yes, FVV will get plenty of playing time his Freshman Season with some probable starts. From there, this will be his team to quarterback.

I watched a couple of his high school games on the internet and his passing ability is off the charts. That paired with Wiggins and Early's ability to score makes me more excited than ever about our incoming recruits.

Let me add nother sentence from Fred's response: "I wouldn't categorize myself as any type - except as a winner".

One of Mrclove4's recent posts said that there are NOT 14 pg's in this country that are better than FVV. Are there even 3 that are better than him? Cat-quick.

Highlights of Auburn point guard Fred Van Vleet. Class of 2012.
