    P.J.'s Free Throw Shooting

    How can it be?

    Fresh = 72.4%
    Soph = 72.9%
    Jr = 68.1%
    Sr = 55.1%

    Hard to imagine how a player can drop off that much his senior season. It will take some really outstanding shooting the remainder of the season to get his percentage back up to where it belongs.

    His total percentage and 3 point percentage are also well below all of his previous seasons.

    I don't believe the shot selection is any less than in the past, I just feel like it is mostly mental. I think he has lost a lot of confidence in his shot. Certainly his free throws have nothing to do with shot selection.

    We all get frustrated, but not nearly as much as P.J. does so I for one am going to support him all the way. Go P.J. :goshocks:

        I guess that's possible, but I'm far from convinced that Mark not being on the sideline has P.J. shooting 55% from the line.

        Sometimes when you start struggling, it is just very difficult to work your way out and it gets more mental every day. I experienced it a great deal over some 45 years of bowling. So many hot streaks that would last for months and cold spells that would last just as long. It was 90% mental.

            None. Not nearly that good. Lucky enough to manage a couple 700 series. High game was 278. Haven't thrown a ball in some 4 years now and probably never will again.

              Last year was an abberation. His shooting hand was hurt towards the end of last year so of course his shooting fell down some.

              This year i just shrug my shoulders.

                Maybe they should check his vision.

                Somebody get Lentz and Baker on the phone, STAT!

                I say that in jest, but maybe they should check out everyone's vision, I mean, they are a year older. :innocent:

                  I've never thought PJ used his legs enough in shooting free throws. This year he seems to have completely abandoned them.

                    I've noticed that as soon as he gets the ball from the ref he just chucks it up there real fast. Slow down P! Take a deep breath and dial-in buddy. Easy shot...easy shot. :good:

                      Yes, I have noticed that also, and from other team members too. Phil and Gal seem to be the only ones to dial in, and have a slight rocking motion with their bodies when they shoot FT, as did Kyle Wilson last year.

                      Even Matt was getting nonchalant about FT the last few games he played.

                        P.J. has never displayed a classis shooting stroke. He is (or can be) a good scorer, but has never been a real good shooter.

                        He has a lot of off-hand involvement, his shot's tend to be flat and, as others have pointed out, he is very quick and doesn't really seem to use his legs at all (doesn't take much) on his free throws.

                        Not a lot of room for error with the way P.J. shoots the ball. It has to be just about perfect to be good.

                        That said it is very difficult to change a player's shooting mechanics especially during the season. If this was to be addressed this is definitely something you tackle in the off-season.

                        There may be a few checkpoints in his shooting PJ could address, but at this point I think he has to go with what he's got and hope for the best.

                        Lack of confidence may be a growing factor also, which can be exacerbated by the poor mechanics.

                        Unfortunately, P.J. is not the only member of the Gang That Can't Shoot Straight.

                          I saw him in pickup games and in the individual workouts just bury shots from the outside. One thing I was noticed was that he was putting more arch on his shot. Why he's reverting back to that flat shot I don't know, but he looks tired.

                            It could be that P.J. made a concerted effort during the off-season to improve his mechanics and his shot. I have no doubt he probably did. However, when stressed by actual game conditions we tend to revert back to older, perhaps more comfortable habits. Fatigue could be a factor, but I would hope that would not show up unitil later in the season.

                              When he was shooting better early in the year, he was definitely getting more arch on his shot.
