  • Marshall for AD

    for a year or so

Oh sure, I'm betting he is sitting on the beach thinking he would like to have more stress in his life.

    I'd love it tho!

Well, I love Marshall as much as the next guy, but that’s a terrible idea.

He'd actually be a great choice. No one shakes hands with boosters better than him and he wouldn't have the stress of having to deal with a bunch of knucklehead kids.

I’ll say this, hire him for fundraising along with Kemnitz and he'd be great. But he is not an athletic director unless he is purely a figurehead.

He’s also got the gift of gab, so being public and transplant would be know issue.

Also, most importantly, he lates to lose. And will do whatever it takes to not lose.

He could hire people to do the back end stuff and focuses his efforts on what he does best.

No good coach would want to walk into that for fear of not having total control of their program.

Have him fundraise if he's willing. But nothing of direct power in the department.

Not a terrible idea, but will never happen...

This is both a ludicrous and a terrible idea.
                    1. The University would almost certainly be forced to take on the other half of Marshall's coaching salary if they admitted that they erred in removing him by bringing him back.
                    2. The primary duty for the newest AD will be to hire a new men's basketball coach. No matter how many bridges Marshall still has in Wichita, he has burned others in the sport. We should consider his prior assistants highly, but we can't afford for them to be the entire field.
In short, Marshall is by far the single most expensive person we could potentially try to hire and would make our coaching search harder, not easier. Not to mention, we would be blacklisting ourselves in the eyes of the broader college sports world.

All of this to bring in a guy with no experience as an AD. Most AD's don't have a coaching background, and those that virtually always have a football background. This is partially because football drives college sports, but it is also because being a football coach (a manger of coaches) is far closer to being an AD than a basketball coach (a coach of players). And ADs are responsible for doing a lot more than getting money from boosters; they have to manage all facets of an athletic program, including scheduling, hiring coaches, promoting programs and events, ordering equipment, constructing budgets, and facilitating operations.
