Bo Ryan's transfer ban list is large

Getting to Madison is easy. It's the leaving that's hard.

It sounds like a cheesy slasher-flick movie poster, or some lame facsimile thereof. But it's become true for Wisconsin forward Jarrod Uthoff, a freshman who last week told Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan he wanted to leave the program to find a better offensive fit. Ryan, as per NCAA rules, outlined a list of schools to which Uthoff would not be allowed to decamp. Ryan put the entire Big Ten, Iowa State, Marquette -- and, now, according to the Metro Sports Report -- the entire Atlantic Coast Conference on Uthoff's apparently-still-growing list of banned schools:

whatever answers you want to come up with, they don't really matter. Know why? Because if Ryan wanted to leave Wisconsin to take a job in the ACC, he could. If he wanted to take a job at Iowa State or Marquette or in the Big Ten, he could. There are no restrictions on where and when he can coach, provided he and a school reach an agreement on a contract. But for players, a coach merely needs to add 30 or so schools to a ban list, and that's that.

Player transferring has become an epidemic, except at Belmont

College basketball has seen more than 350 head-coaching changes and God knows how many more player transfers (it's easily more than 2,000) in that time frame. The last Bruins transfer, his name was John Morningstar, and he parted ways with the program in December of 2003.
Since then? Byrd's taken Belmont to every NCAA tournament in program history (there's been five trips, all since 2006), won more than 20 games seven times and never finished worse than third in the Atlantic Sun. Outside of an obvious choice like Butler (and Brad Stevens has a similar low retention rate, naturally) Belmont is the model for achievement and consistency in college basketball. Not merely mid-major college basketball, but every tier within the sport.

Rick Byrd is officially at the top of my watch list in the unthinkable event that we (ever) need a replacement for HCGM...

Hilarious, considering Wisconsin's football team is being built on playing QBs that transferred from other schools.

The basketball team does everything they can to screw over players wanting to transfer out, while the football team is begging players to transfer to it.

And the latest Wisconsin QB, transferring over from Maryland, only came to Wisconsin because of a similar story where Maryland's coach banned him from transferring to a number of schools, including the one coached by the guy who had actually recruited him to Maryland in the first place.
