  • The Death of College Basketball

What we are seeing at WSU is only the beginning.

Viewership and $$$ will go down nationwide as people won’t invest in supporting a team of thirteen new players every year.

Twenty or so teams will be competitive every year, but that will not be sustainable.

Eyeballs will looks elsewhere, arenas will be vacant, and the cash cow that is the NCCA tournament will be slaughtered.

Enjoy whatever else you guys fill your life with outside of this, because that time is about to increase.

Agree. Greed will be the end of "amateur" athletics. Just a matter of time, in my opinion as well.

So sad. I don't blame players wanting to make money but there has to be a better way. Right now it's jump at who can get me the most.

Almost feel like there should be a binding contract for so many years. If you break that agreement, you owe the school/NIL fund some amount back.

Water always finds its level. It may take a couple years, but it will settle.

Again, a NEW league to replace the NCAA is needed. A pure college amateur league with strict rules, their own tournaments, etc that will thrive as the NCAA kills itself.

In another thread someone asked how NIL started, so I did a little searching:

Basically it all started in July 2009 when UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon filed a lawsuit against the NCAA after seeing his likeness used without his permission in a video game. Other athletes joined the case and eventually a court ruled in favor of O'Bannon in August 2014 and ruled "that the NCAA's long-held practice of barring payments to athletes violated antitrust laws". The NCAA appealed but the Supreme Court denied the appeal.

Other lawsuits by athletes regarding other forms of compensation were grouped together into another lawsuit and the same judge ruled "against the NCAA in March 2019 and required the NCAA to allow students to obtain other non-cash scholarships, internships and other support beyond the full cost-of-attendeance for academic purpose." The NCAA appealed that ruling and the Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal. They upheld the ruling in June 2021 and on "July 1, 2021, the NCAA announced the board had agreed to new rules that removed restrictions on college athletes from entering paid endorsements and other sponsorship deals, and from using agents to manage their publicity."

The above all comes from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Bannon_v._NCAA There's also another web site with a time line of NIL in particular at https://www.on3.com/news/what-is-nil...lston-decision and it starts with things in September 2019. US Senators were involved along the way in some of the NIL stuff. It's interesting to read the timeline and details if one has time.

O'Bannon had an ironclad suit. The NIL in and of itself isn't the issue. It's the NIL and the portal combined. The portal is going to have to get solved or the Lower 80% or Upper 20% of teams are going to have form their own alternative to the NCAA.

I'd gladly watch us play Friends and Tabor and Baker on even footing over this bullpoop.

Can we get kids from our welding program to suit up? Maybe they can play the kids from McPherson Auto Body.

College football will be even worse. Since the year 2000, eleven different teams have won the national title. Going forward, we will see the same 8 insanely wealthy schools win almost all titles. Once fans realize their team has literally no chance of ever winning a title again, they will not be spending 3-5k a year for donations and good seats to the games. Money will entirely kill college sports within two decades.

I’m glad this is happening to college basketball because the a$$h$&@! like Bilas can get what they wish for; the blue bloods can cheat against each other and no one will care. The whole basis for the popularity and mystique of COLLEGE basketball is the loyalty, connection and reverence for the college alma mater. That’s gone. I don’t think there’s a future in it and there ain’t one for me. I have always said I am only in this for my Shockers!

I find it interesting that the word “revenue” is used in all these discussions but not profits.

For those who didn’t have to pass accounting class to graduate college: Revenue does not equal Profit.
