  • Player Efficiency Rating (PER)

I had some time on my hands tonight so I figured I would take a look at the PER for the primary 10 guys playing for the Shox this season. Pretty telling when you think about it. For those who don't know or aren't familiar, the PER is a a formula that attempts to measure a players per-minute productivity. It was created by John Hollinger at ESPN and was outlined in his book Pro Basketball Forecast. I am not the brightest bulb in the box, but I assume it isn't good when three of your starters are in the bottom 5. Anybody care to make an argument for Pleasant to be starting? I believe a PER of 15 is the benchmark for an average to slightly above-average player. For reference, Josh Carlton at Houston has a PER of 32.31 and Kendric Davis at SMU is at 27.51.

MikeKennedyRulZ, serious question. Does this measure defense and offense or just offense only?

I played a little game in my head before I looked at the list and got the bottom 3 and top 3 correct. KP was a wild guess but I figured he'd be top 3. All this did for me was confirm what my eyes have been telling me all season. JP has an identical twin who practices for him. Cuz that dude shouldn't be on the court. At least not at the tip.

On any other team, JP is a big body that can give breathers at the 4 or 5.

Not surprised. JP has no business starting.

I believe it includes certain defensive criteria such as blocked shots and steals. Those are statistical. I don't think it can measure how well of a defender you are such as keeping a 20+ scorer locked down to only 10 points. Same goes for the reverse. One's "best" offensive player usually will draw the opposing team's best defenders. Anyone knowing differently, please correct me.

As ShockTalk mentioned it does includes steals, blocks and defensive rebounds in to the formula but it doesn't (and I'm not sure how you would even go about it) include who a player guarded and how they performed against said person. That is more of an eye test stat and clearly DD is the best on the Shox roster at that.

For the discussion of Porter vs. Gilbert in the other thread I looked at AG's PER from last season and it was 12.47. So he and Porter were similar in their efficiencies.

In my mind, this whole discussion begs the question of should the starting five be Porter, Council, DD, Pohto, and Udeze? I tend to think why not try it?

Thank you, MKR for the explanation.

I try and watch interior defense and I never miss a game. I have noticed
that Udeze strays outside of the paint and dribble drivers go right in at
ease when he does. Now watch KP. He seldom gets more than 10-12 ft
away from the rim and right in the middle most of the time. I've noticed many
dribble drivers abort when he slides to help out. Anyone else notice this?
AM was also very a very good as a deterrent to dribble drivers and never
                        got credit.

People played down my starting lineup of:

                          1 - CP
                          2 - RC
                          3 - DD
                          4 - KP
                          5 - MU

Looks like its pretty darn close to the most efficient lineup though ;)

Definitely noticed this pretty much every game. Its a BBIQ thing and remembering what you are taught to do in practice and knowing your spots on defense. Not saying that KP is a good defender, because he definitely has work to do, but his awareness is really good.

KP's defensive awareness 100% looks to be more "aware". The 6'-11 height (7'-4 with the hair) is definitely more aware! Or could it simply be...the a-hair???
