Wichita State Basketball: Analyzing Shockers 2021 incoming recruiting class - FanSided Sports
Wichita State Basketball has five newcomers on the roster for the upcoming season. Which of them will have the biggest impact?

"Wichita State Basketball must be happy to have things relatively back to normal this offseason, now a year removed from the issues which resulted in the resignation of Gregg Marshall. The man who stepped in, Isaac Brown, managed to right the ship resulting in a successful season that included an AAC regular-season championship and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
To duplicate that success this season, Brown may have to turn to a few new faces for production. The Shockers brought in three freshman and two transfers to make up for the losses of some key pieces including Trey Wade from last year’s successful run. Now let’s take a look at these new faces for Isaac Brown and how they fit into the Shockers’ rotation in 2021-22.
5. Isaac Abidde
Isaac Abidde was the 13th and final scholarship player that Coach Brown added to fill out the Shockers 2021-22 roster after reclassing over the summer. At 6’9″ Abidde brings length and versatility to a team that is slightly undersized. Brown envisions him being able to use lateral quickness and size to match up with positions 1 through 4. Even though Abidde will be the second tallest player in the rotation this year, he will play mainly the 3 with a little bit of the 4. His unique skillset of being able to knock down threes while also being an elite rim protector will help him earn time in year 1.
4. Kenny Pohto
Isaac Brown made it clear from this recruiting class that he wanted to improve the size and versatility of his roster. Kenny Pohto fits the description, coming in at 6’11 with legitimate athleticism and shooting touch. He originally committed to Minnesota, before the firing of Richard Pitino led him to Wichita. The consensus top-150 recruit showed out in the Nordic Cup for the Sweden U20 team over the summer, leading his team in scoring on their way to the championship. His most impressive game came in the semifinals where he put up: 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks while shooting 3-3 from beyond the arc. He also just won the “Shocker Madness” three-point competition two weeks ago.
3. Jalen Ricks
The Oak Hill Academy product fits the same mold as the two previous recruits listed, combining great length with versatility. Ricks is listed at 6’7, but prefers to play more as a combo guard rather than a 3 or 4. He possesses good ball skills but may be suited better on the wing with his perimeter shooting paired ability to get to the rim. He grew a few inches over the past year, making his already impressive ability to rebound even more strong. His 6’11 wingspan paired with his high motor and leaping ability make it almost a guarantee he will continue to rebound at a high level in Wichita.
2. Joe Pleasant
The Abilene Christian transfer is one of the most underrated transfer pickups of this busy offseason in college basketball. Pleasant comes over to the Shockers after averaging 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a game for the Wildcats. At 6’7 231lbs he has the ability to handle the ball and stretch the floor (46.5%), creating a matchup problem for most defenses. Pleasant most notably knocked off 3rd seeded Texas with two clutch free throws with a second left on the clock in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Despite his great success at Abilene Christian, he will be in a battle for the starting 4 spot with another 6’7 forward in Clarence Jackson.
1. Qua Grant
Qua Grant is a 6’1 transfer guard who comes in from D2, West Texas A&M. He was incredible in his three years there, earning multiple national honors including becoming a D2CCA First Team All-American in 2021. He was awarded this honor after putting up: 22.4 ppg, 8 rpg, and 3.2 apg on his way to leading the Buffs to a national runner-up finish in 2020-21. Coach Isaac Brown loves his toughness and creativity off the bounce, to go along with his impressive scoring ability. The Shockers have some question marks when it comes to the point guard spot coming into the season and Grant could challenge senior Craig Porter for that title come opening night."
