    1981 Wichita State-Iowa

    As we look ahead to the promise of another exciting season of March Madness, I want to take a moment to look back at our Shocker heritage. A game that many people consider to be one of the greatest games ever in The Roundhouse took place 40 years ago today.

    First of all, does anyone have a good recording of that game? I have seen clips of it but have never seen the broadcast. I would love to get my hands on a copy.

    The story has been told many times. Loud crowd. KU in the house as well. Iowa up early and up 40-25 in the second half. WSU stormed back to tie the game. Lute Olson fudged up with timeouts. Randy Smithson hit two free throws to give the Shockers the lead for good.

    For those of you "with more life experience," what other memories do you have of this game?

    So crowded. I remember a band, maybe the Iowa band, crowded into a space no bigger than 2 office desks. I have no idea how they were able to play.

    Iowa had 2 big whiter than white centers. Steve Waite and Steve Krafscisen (I'm sure that's not close at all on either name) both 6-10+ and a handful in the paint. Seemed like the Shocks were totally outclassed until the 2nd half comeback started. Want to say it was 36-25 at half, and they scored 2 quick buckets out of the half that made 40-25 before the comeback started.

    There was a play, maybe it was Cliff that fell onto the ground and somebody stepped right on his unit, and he grabbed it like the world was ending (and I'm sure it felt that way) and Antoine was bent over him trying to tell him not to grab it on TV. I might have the players switched up. A far cry from an EMAW peeing into towels during the game, but that was a different time. Plenty of men wearing ties and a hat. Geez I'm old.........

    Very loud. Not the loudest, but right there. Antoine and Cliff were very, very good in the 2nd half. Randy falling backwards trying to coax the free throw in (pretty much steadily downhill for Randy from there).

    Ku beat Arizona State with Alton Lister in the later game. Sat near a clown who bitched about Alton's poor play the entire game. As big a buzzkill/letdown moment as I've ever experienced.

      Can't forger Byron Scott and Fat Lever for Arizona State. Ranked 3rd in final AP.

      Crowds standing in the aisles. Religious experience; many hands were raised (i.e. high-fivin') amongst WSU zealots who knew not each other, and a joyous sound was heard throughout the land, or at least from 21st & Hillside all the way east to Rock Road I'm sure.

      The WSU Florida St. game had that same feel.

        The loudest I ever remember. I was right behind our basket in second half and the Hawkeyes were visibly shaken by the crowd causing us to yell louder and louder while we inched pass them. The hell cheer was in its best format because the HEY part sounded like a cannon going off! Randy was so clutch and their two white post men were gorillas but the bookends would not be denied. The crowd pushed the team to victory more clearly than I have ever scene. So fun and so happy after the game but nothing would be better than the following week buzzard kill in New Orleans.

            If it was anything like Florida St. NIT, it must have been magical. That was a night I'll never forget. Otherworldly.

              I was 3 and living in Houston. But I have heard a LOT about it! ;)

                Geez, Byron Scott, Fat Lever AND Alton Lister were on that ASU team? How Ku ran them out of the building I'll never know.

                  Yeah that crowd rattled Iowa. You could see it in their faces. I remember a game against OSU in Koch and Eddie Sutton was the coach. The crowd got so loud Sutton would call a time out every time it got too loud so he could talk to his players and try and take the WSU crowd out of the game. I didn't like it at the time but it was a smart move.

                    I took a class from Dr. Perline in the business school during the semester of the Florida State game. The class in that room right before that was taught by Dr. May, so I would see him as I arrived for class and he was exiting. When I was talking to him about how jacked that game atmosphere was, the comparison he made was the Iowa game.

                      I remember talking a professor into cancelling class 10 minutes into it so that students could try to go to the game lol (it was a 3 hour night session lol)

                        Wasn't the Fl. St. game WSU's first post-season game in the Round House since the Iowa game? I believe it was.

                          I had a class with Dr. Perline. A true Wichita State gem. Big Shocker Basketball fan too!

                            Close. Won an NIT home game in 1989 before losing the next one on the road.
