  • The Legend of Ron Barker

Dave Flemming and Sean Farnham are doing the Zags/BYU game tonight, and they brought up one of the late great Zags team that had their title hopes dashed by the great Wichita State Shockers led by the dynamic duo of Fred Van Vleet and Ron Barker.

Is he related to Rob Baker or Bob Barker?

Heard that too. Still can't get it right.

There just about couldn’t be an easier name. Easy to read, easy to pronounce, common name. Amazing that they can’t get it right.

Easy to remember those guys, but Armstrong was the straw that stirred the drink that year.

Barker was at the Hays high game last night. My son got a picture with him.

Hopefully he was there scouting for the Shocks, so once he is hired as an assistant coach he can hit the ground running!

Does Ron Baker have any qualification to be an assistant coach? I see people mention him as a potential assistant. I assume it’s a joke but maybe not.

IMO, replacing any of the three current assistants with Ron Baker would be a massive step down. Sorry if I’m taking these comments too seriously.

I don't think he's ever expressed interest in coaching, but he does come from a coaching family.

I think most expect Kennedy to leave so there will most likely be at least one opening. I have no idea what Waterman and Lou will do, but nothing will surprise me.

Back to Ron, if he were interested in coaching he'd probably have to start by enrolling in school and being a grad assistant or starting out as a DOBO. I don't expect to ever see Ron on ours, or anyone else's sideline.

If we have an opening for an assistant .. i hope Greg Lansing is one of the first calls, though I bet he will have head coaching offers elsewhere.

Hard to believe they can't remember the main players for a team that went undefeated for an entire college basketball season.

Their basketball knowledge is seriously suspect, especially fharnam, who covered the Shocks that very season, when they played Brigham Young in that Kansas City tournament, the season we went undefeated. We were playing Brigham Young because Texas wasn't good enough to beat em the night before, which was disappointing because I wanted the Shocks to have another shot at the mighty b12 (-2).

That was a fun tournament. I remember a big mouth BYU fan talking trash when BYU got a fair sized lead in the first half but then didn’t have much to say when we beat their a$$.

Yeap I remember that game. I was there in the Sprint center in KC. . Ron and Fred Vanvleet played a helluva game. All the shocks did. I also remember chicken hawk and kitty cats fans in KC trying to figure how the Shocks won that tournament. Their fans are just stupid.

If Ron were to come on staff it should be as a grad assistant. It would be a good way for him to see if coaching is a good fit.
