Is it just me or is it a sad fact that we're even talking about a promotion for students to come watch a 1st place, nearly nationally ranked basketball team with a 20-4 record? WTH is the deal? And Pom Poms? Seriously? This is embarrassing and a sad statement that even WSU can't sell out during one of the better season's we've had in years.

Cohen went to every group I was in asking for attendance. That was the only era I didn't regularly attend games. The team sucked, they were a-holes in the CAC, missed classes, got arrested & they sucked. I can't see where any of these things are an issue now.
And the corporate tix, show up or hire someone who will. (Like me).Phi Alpha

I think promotions are good. I remember High School we got extra credit for going to games, activities, ect from many teachers. Would love to see Coach get with the professors about something like that. As much as I want to put this on the AD solely, I would like to know exactly what effort the players and coaching staff, and basketball office are doing in their power to get students there.

What more motivation do you need than free tickets?
I'm not sure how it is for K-State but its pretty well known at places like KU and Duke you have to camp out sometimes for weeks on end for tickets. So if there is no monetary cost for the tickets there the opportunity cost is pretty great. I can understand fewer students camping out to go watch Maryland.

I think students were more likely to attend when they had to pay - evan if it was a small amount. I think the tickets were $25 for the season.
In my era (class of 2002) there were a few things that seemed to help attendance (i have no idea if any of these things happen now):
1) Turgeon made it a point to let the students know how important they were to the team's success. He was everywhere visiting student meetings
2) There were on-going attendance promotions
3) The foreign national contingent were regulars at games. I do not see them in large numbers now
4) The direct payment to attend the game (as stated above)
5) There were friendly rivalries of student groups to show up

On the duke thing, we have a better home record than them right now. Just saying.
I think a priority seating idea for students would actually make it better. KSU did the ICAT where they gave a $20 and got better seats. That would be easy to do and would guarantee more rowdy students down front.
Actually the visiting student groups started with Smithson in his last year. A group of students tried to get it going and brought the coaches into it. The coaching staff was very receptive to it and I believe that Turgeons staff felt the same way.
Don't put any more on the basketball office. They already have enough going on in there. The ladies in there are busy with all kinds of things and the staff needs to concentrate on the games and season and recruiting.
The attendance promotions were because students only showed up in large numbers for TV games. And avg attendance was around 7000to total. Not near what it is now.
