  • Wichita State vs. Tulane Pregame Discussion 2-3-21

    WICHITA STATE (9-4, 5-2) vs TULANE (7-5, 2-5)
    WEDNESDAY, FEB 3, 2021 | 7:00 P.M. CT
WICHITA, KS / CHARLES KOCH ARENA
    TV: ESPN+
    RADIO: KEYN 103.7 FM (GoShockers.com/Listen)
    LAST MEETING: FEBRUARY 16, 2020. WSU 82 - TULANE 57
    GAME RECAP
: Dexter Dennis and Tyson Etienne both topped 20 points to lead Wichita State to an 82-57 rout of Tulane at a sold-out Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (19-6, 7-5 American) posted its 100th win by 20-or-more points under Gregg Marshall (2007-pr.).

The Shockers' 30-point halftime lead (50-20) tied for the sixth-largest in school history.

Dennis scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting to go with nine rebounds. He was 4-of-5 from distance.

Etienne (20 points) tied WSU's freshman record with six three-pointers on eight attempts. That matches a mark set six other times, most recently by Dennis last year and by Landry Shamet during the 2016-17 season.

Jaime Echenique aqdded 10 points and five rebounds.

Jamarius Burton scored nine points and handed out a game-high seven assists with just one turnover. He becomes just the sixth Shocker to reach 200 career assists by the end of his sophomore season, joining a list that includes both Shamet and Fred VanVleet.

Christion Thompson scored a team-high 16 points and Jordan Walker added 14 off the bench to lead Tulane (10-15, 2-11), which dropped its ninth-straight game.

Tulane entered the day ranked 13th nationally in turnover margin but among the bottom 10 in rebounding margin.

That's precisely how things played out. The Shockers were plus-17 on the glass (48-31) but committed 16 turnovers to the Green Wave's eight.

The Shockers shot 48.3 percent from the field and a season-best 54.2 percent from beyond the arc. Eight of their 13 threes came in the first half.

By contrast, Tulane made just 2-of-18 threes and finished up at 34.5 percent.

The Shockers made 15 of their first 23 shots to start the game.

Dennis hit three triples in just over five minutes. Etienne drilled back-to-back to put the Shockers up 24-10 near the midway point.

It was a 24-12 game before Wichita State exploded with a 17-2 run, fueled by transition baskets.

One of the highlights came near the 8:00-mark when Asbjorn Midtgaard swatted a shot, and Grant Sherfield lobbed to ball to Dennis for an alley-oop slam.

Etienne's third three of the half made it a 32-point lead (50-18) with 38 seconds to play in the half.

The teams traded baskets for much of the second half. The Green Wave used a 10-0 run to close to within 70-48 with 7:01 to play.

The Shockers responded with a 9-0 push, fueled by Etienne's fifth and sixth three-pointers of the day.

Would be nice to get Wade 2, Seymour, Bilau and Jenkins some minutes in this one.

If the "Tulane 81 at Temple 64" team shows up, don't count on it.

Tulane is a team we should pummel if we’re serious about being a Top 3 team in this league.

"New" coach, many new team members, problems with COVID, and inconsistency by individual players from game to game, lead to inconsistency by the team. Very little is "normal" this year.

Play Bilau at least 12-14 minutes.........time to see what we have here. Could be a diamond in the rough being
              ignored like AM was.

This is a concern of mine. I often said to friends that if AM got the playing time needed to get more comfortable and get into the flow of things, we'd have seen bigger steps and more consistency. The few times he got extended playing time, we saw some of that. Then he transfers and is having a hell of a season.

I'd hate to see Bilau transfer. He's our strongest and most athletic big who has shown some good signs when given opportunities. I'd hate to see him transfer out and go beast mode elsewhere.

To be fair, I think it’s important to consider the possibility that the coaches at WSU also deserve some credit for Mitgaards break out year at GCU. They did coach him for three years after all.

It would be nice to get Bilau some extended playing time to let him get a feel for things but I can point to a few reasons why that hasn’t happened yet. For one, due to Covid crap we haven’t had the same number of buy games as normal that would allow him to get minutes without worrying about the outcome of the game. He is also coming off an injury and was unavailable for the two games where he might have been able to get extended run. The American is a tough conference with few gimmes and we’ve played a tough schedule so far. I think the goal of trying to win games is at odds with the goal of trying to develop Bilau. Meaning that based on what I’ve seen so far, playing him more minutes would result in decreased odds of winning the game.

I’m not giving up on him by any means and I hope we finally get to the point of the schedule (and the games are played) where we can open up the bench some more.

According to this graph, tomorrow night's game will feature the two teams with the worst shooters in major college basketball. At least our shot selection is better.

Just win baby! I would like a 20 point win but I suspect it will be around a 10 point win.

JoBu needs minutes. If he can play, fine. If not, then........
