No they weren't out of contention. They ended up winning their conference tourney and making some noise anyway, but had they played a team in the 20s they would have had a decent case for an at large. By playing us they had no chance.

I remember Coach Waters actually calling them out at a presser and I thought, wow wish we had someone in our league with the balls to do that.

Eh, if you say so. The number of mid-majors who earn at-large bids with an RPI over 50 in late February are about as common as unicorns.

Regardless- their at large position in 2009 was nowhere near as promising as ours is this year. Our screwjob wins hands down on the scale of epicness.

Agreed and also agree their chances were slim. But had they beat say Utah St or Morehead St that year you never know. Sending them to us buried any remote chance.

This tells me that even if we had won the Drake game, we still would not have been paired with Murray State.

I've been critical of this event but accepted it since the coaches seem to like it. But now, Elgin either needs to get the Valley out of this event or we should start calling for his job.

No doubt. We kind of had a hint when Katz flapped his lips about it last week.

                  4. Wichita State at Davidson, Feb. 18 (12 p.m., ESPN/ESPN2): The Shockers lost in triple overtime at Drake over the weekend. Davidson lost at Samford. That takes a bit of the luster out of both teams’ ability to possibly move up in the matchups. But each team has a shelf-life win that could catch the selection committee in March. Wichita State blew out UNLV at home and Davidson beat Kansas in Kansas City. A road win by Wichita State would enhance its strength of schedule and likely bump up the 31 RPI. Davidson, at 67, could use a top-40 RPI win, too. Wichita will want to push at every opportunity. Davidson may be a bit more deliberate. No one should be shocked if both of these teams are in the tournament and in position to win a first-round game. This game may not knock the other out from contention for a bid. But clearly Wichita State may need it more since Davidson has a better shot to earn the automatic berth out of the Southern than Wichita does in the more competitive Missouri Valley.

Agree. That game was penciled in days ago, IMHO. What the BB people didn't count on was Davidson losing to Samford and Son, dropping their RPI twenty plus points. Otherwise we are playing a top 50 team.

I understand the talk about us getting skee-rude, but I think we should focus more on winning the game against a weaker opponent. HCGM needs to use this to motivate his players.

I'm worried after the minutes our starters played on Saturday, we might have a three-game losing streak (Drake, MoSt and Creighton) if HCGM doesn't get the team snapped back very quick.

These are college kids and with a couple of days rest they will be chomping at the bit to beat the **** out of baby Weems. I don't think fatigue will be a factor in the least.
Shocker fan for life after witnessing my first game in person, the 80-74 win over the #12 Creighton Bluejays at the Kansas Coliseum.

This is a horrible game this year. Davidson is pretty salty at home. Playing a 50 - 100 rpi team on the road isn't a desireable game in WSU's situation. If the potential 3-game losing streak develops (DU - MSU - CU), then Davidson could easily become an "elimination" game, with no benefit to either team for a win.

The return game next year should be a good home game. Davidson's rotation includes 4 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, and 1 Freshman. Everybody getting minutes this year is coming back.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I think the return game is in 2 years.

There can't be a DU-MSU-CU skid. We play ISUblue and UNI in between the Bears and the Jays.
