  • Oklahoma State - a look ahead

Oklahoma State. Going to be a tough one. Currently 4-0 with wins against UT Arlington, Tx Southern, Marquette, and Oakland. Not the same credentials looking at a side by side comparison of schedules between Mizzou and OSU, but OSU is going to be a tough, albeit FUN game. How often do you get a regional rivalry game like this with NO FANS in the stands???

Led by (duhhhh) Cade Cunningham who may or may not be one of the top choices in the NBA draft. Barring injury, in all likelihood, a top 7 choice.
Averages 18 pts, 6 boards, 4.5 asts, 2 steals, 1 block, 50% field goals, 84% fts and 46% on 3balls. He does average 3 TOs a game, but I have to doubt its due to defensive pressure and more along the lines of wanting to make special passes/plays for teammates. Don't know who guards him, no clue at all. I mean, he's *only* 6'8" tall for a guard and weighs in at 220 lbs. My guess is someone has to face guard him like a blanket and just try and deny him the ball?? Not sure if he's primary ball handler for OSU, but if he is, how do you prevent that one guy from getting the ball - IF you make a basket.

Rest of the team is completely balanced, like, there's no other guy you really have to stop, but I'm sure they're all capable of making big plays. They have nowhere near the height of Mizzou, two 6'10" guys that don't play too much (according to the stats). Two Junior guards (Flavors and Williams) compliment Cade. Flavors (looks like) can be a streaky shooter, hot one game hopefully not so hot our game. He's 33% from 3 ball land. Keep your eyes on Williams though 46% from 3. Two other guards Likekele and Anderson are capable at 3balls at 60% and 40%. Make no mistake, they are GUARD ORIENTED - something that's been a sore spot for the last few years defensively.

Anyone seen them play? I expect we'll see some free throws shot in this game. Don't know who gets more, but if Shox don't stay in front of the ball handlers we're going to watch a lot of FTs. Help defense may be critical this game, something we've only seen in spurts, and mostly on fast breaks when DD or someone is upset they lost the ball and are trying to recover and block a layup.

Hopeful we get a good game from DD, me likey C Jackson and even R Council inlimited action (so far) with MU and IPBC coming in off bench. Instincts "in-game" may be a little better for the style of play I expect. Hope for C Jackson to get the start and hopefully the SHocks get off to a better start than 12-4 or 16-5. Hope to see more new faces from players that have been waiting.....and waiting....and in Bilau's case waaaaaiiiiiting. Go Shocks!

Added: Just noticed DD has not even attempted a single free throw in two games. That's unacceptable. We need DD to be far more aggressive in getting shots and making plays. Let's go Dex!

I'm guessing Dex guards Cunningham and tries to deny the ball. Jackson is probably 2nd choice but has probably never had such a lofty assignment.

I thought Jackson too .. but i seem to remember him stumbling a bit when trying to guard a ball handler yesterday. He's got the length and energy, but not sure his footwork is ready.

Throw Jackson on him to start. Replace with Trevin as needed.

Trevin is 5'11 .. Cunningham is 6'8. He'd just shoot over the top of him all day.

I know the Pokes aren't as big in the post as Mizzou is. I think this is a better matchup for us, but I may change my mind after I see Cade Cunningham.

Think we have a good opportunity to play better in this one if we can get some normal practices in. Last year Dexter Dennis said that he wanted to be the guy that could be the Tekele Cotton-like stopper on defense, and I think this is a good opportunity for him to prove it. OSU seems to be a bit better than Missouri, but we'll have more players and shouldn't be quite as outsized. If we can contain Cunningham and get Dennis or Etienne going I think we have a good shot even if we are coming in as sure underdogs.

I just hope the player who guarded Etienne last year is the same player who guards him this year. Was he a white dude?

I am very interested to see this team after a full week of practice with the entire team available.

-Is Bilau the long armed, 1-5 guarding, rebounding animal he looked like last year in the exhibition game and shocker madness? That would be a plus.
-Is Craig Porter the do it all guy who can give us another creator and scorer?
-Chauncey Jenkins and Jayden Seymour are complete mysteries but Ricky Council didn’t look completely lost out there against a really good Mizzou team. He looks like he could be dangerous in transition and slashing to the basket (but can he make free throws?).
-Can we figure out how to stop someone in transition?

I don’t expect a win but this team is still such an unwritten book I wouldn’t be totally surprised. I’d say 80/20 but then I haven’t seen OSU play or the Covid all stars.

For whatever reason Bilau has never been healthy since he arrived going back to last year. Does anyone have a status report on him. If not I will be surprised if he is suited up for the next game. Color me cautious at best. When he does get to play one would think he would be a contributor.

Will it help our basketball team!

In this weeks Talk Angry podcast Taylor mentioned Porter and Bilau as the two players most likely to make an instant impact when they return.

He called Porter the “Clarence Jackson” of the guards in terms of his toughness and will to win. He sounds a like a Ron Baker type to me.

Again mentioned the buzz from coaches about Bilau, specifically his defense, but also mentioned he’s dealt with recovery from an off season surgery in addition to the recent Covid restriction.

                              Quotables: Isaac Brown Pre-Oklahoma State

Wichita State men's basketball interim head coach Isaac Brown spoke to the media ahead of the Shockers' Saturday matchup with Oklahoma State. Brown discussed how to handle OSU's preseason All-American freshman guard Cade Cunningham, what he thought of the Shockers' first two games and his games of HORSE with Fred VanVleet.
