How league offices are shaping league races

At conference headquarters across the land, two things are givens: complaints from schools about the officiating and complaints from schools about the schedule.

In the case of the former, leagues must try to hire well – both refs and supervisors of officials – and simply hope for the best. In the case of the latter, the job is nearly impossible and always thankless.

There is annual crabbing about who has to play where on how much rest, and who has the most difficult stretches of games. In the days of full round-robin scheduling, it all used to even out in the end. Then conferences became the size of China, and it became even more arduous to schedule fairness into the question.

So The Minutes sympathizes with the suits in charge of putting together a balanced slate. But it’s interesting to see how much strength-of-schedule appears to be impacting conference races at this point. Check Ken Pomeroy’s SOS numbers in the top 10 leagues and you’ll see the perks of an easy entry into conference play.

Here is what he says about WSU....

Missouri Valley (12): Co-leader Wichita State has played the No. 10 schedule out of 10, and fellow co-leader Creighton has played the No. 7 schedule. The Shockers already have played softies Bradley and Southern Illinois twice each.

    **************
So while we are looking good at 7-1, we now get into the meat of our schedule. But I feel this team is ready to take that challenge.

-WSU can't play themselves so right there it hurts.

-They have played 5 road games and only 3 homes games.

-They won at UNI and UE already, those to teams will finish somewhere between 3rd and 5th when all said and done.

-The only team WSU hasn't seen yet that is in what I would consider the middle class would be MSU.

      Drake is middle class, imo.

Drake will lose 4 or 5 more games in conference and finish in 5th place. Up to this point, they haven't picked up any surprising wins.

So, would you say 5th place in the valley is upper or lower class? Or...middle class?

LMAO. MSU concerns me, because Weems and company will "rise" above their ability to play against us specifically. If we have an off night, that is going to suck. If we have a solid, decent, or stellar night then nothing to worry about at all.

Just as long as we don't get Creighton on their Senior Night again like it felt like we did every year of the Turgeon era

Hey If I remember correctly, we get Illinois State for their Senior Night and guess what? They don't have any seniors on their team this year. Someone please check this to see if I am correct!

They definitely don't have any SRs. They're going to be a heck of a team next year.

They probably have some Senior managers that they have to thank, and thus firing up the Illinois State players to play the game of their lives.

If I didn't dream it, last year MSU beat WSU twice to help send them to the NIT.

I think that should account for some motivation on the Shocker's part.

As much as I can't stand Weems and his throat-slashing, chest-pounding, antics, I'm sure he's going to be fired up to play us. I would love to come away from Springfield with a W, but I'm not getting my hopes up on that one.

Maybe. If they fire Yankonit. His first three seasons, (while he still had Mosers players), were his best. As Mosers players graduated after each season, the team got worse and worse (RPI), bottoming out in the forth season. Now in Yanks fifth season with all of his own players, and their RPI is still 100 and something. Next season with Yanks typically weak ooc schedule, he'll win a few more games, get his RPI into the 80's, and be lucky to finish forth in the MVC. 3G will still smell blood in Illinois.

Jank improved the schudling some this year and I believe has them in a decent MTE next season.

Still, the talent is there to be at the top of the Valley race.
