  • I think Ryan is a great shooter, but he's not a great player. He's a very good player. He is average, at best, defensively. He's average, at best, as a ball handler. He's brilliant at being able to get his shot and draw fouls.

He is NOT one of the five best players in the league, but he's probably one of the 10 best. However, he'll be 1st team All Valley because the Valley is an even Steven, milktoast circle jerk league. CU and WSU own (at least) the 5 best all around players, with the exception of Kyle Weems, in the league between Dougie, Young, Ragland, GregE, Murry and Stutz.

Just for grins, what do you think Ethan Wragge for Creighton would do if he were in UE's system? He'd average 30+ taking that many shots.

      3-point Shooting percentage:
      Ryan: .441

Percentage of all shots attempts taken from 2 point range:
      Ryan: 60%
      Ragland: 53%

      2-point shooting percentage:
      Ryan: 42%
      Ragland: 64%

Both guys shoot around the same percentage from 3. Both guys take more 2 point attempts than 3s (and Ryan takes an even higher percentage than Ragland). However, Ryan's 2-point percentage is below 2% below his 3-point percentage, while Ragland's is 20% above his 3-point percentage. In other words, Colt Ryan is a very good outside shooter, but he is not the all around offensive player that a guy like Joe Ragland is (who can also match his outside shooting percentages).

      To sum up:
      Points Per Shot Attempt
      Ryan: 1.49
      Ragland: 1.62

      Volume vs. efficiency
And whether or not his volume is a net positive for UE would depend on the PPS of his teammates. My suspicion is that his volume for that team is quite valuable.

I certainly don't disagree with that. My observations were not to say that he isn't a good player, or even an objectively inefficient scorer (he shoots well enough from 3 to make his overall efficiency high), just that when considering him amongst the best players in the league, he outscores other elite Valley players more on volume than efficiency. As @WuDrWu: said, he is among the top 10 players in the league, but his points per game will cause some to rank him even higher than that.

        • All good points, TMH. I was just throwing your analysis into a different context.

Can't help but to think that Seck would be in the discussion if he weren't playing for SIU.

I so agree with all of this. He's the type of guy that can shoot his own team out of a game, while racking up lots of points -- mainly because they don't have any other choice other than to let him. On the flip-side he can shoot his team to victory on the good nights. They really need to recruit a supporting cast around him beyond Harris (who I thought played very well the other night).
